The general concept is that a wild-card is the team within a conference with the best record that did not finish Top X in their division. In the NFL it's “Top 1”, aka the division winners; in the NHL, it's Top 3. Right now, the top three teams in each division get into the playoffs automatically.
Playoff Format
The top three teams in each division will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season record and regardless of division. This means up to seven games are played until one team wins 4 of the games. The first three rounds decide which team from each conference will move on to the last round. The last round is called the Stanley Cup Finals. The winner of that set of games becomes the NHL and Stanley Cup winner.
