Max had a negative relationship with her new stepfather and stepbrother, and she especially resented Billy's bullying. In 1984, Max and her family moved from California to Hawkins, Indiana, leaving Max resentful that she had to leave California and her father behind.
Dacre Montgomery, who plays Billy, won't be returning as his character died sacrificing himself to save Hawkins. And we also saw the tragic death of Hawkins' chief of police Hopper, although the new trailer (watch above) revealed that the scruffy cop is in fact alive and (not so) well.
“Hawkins mourns the loss of Police Chief Jim Hopper, who perished in the line of duty on July 4th in the Starcourt Mall fire, which claimed the lives of at least thirty others,” the front page read. “He was a good man. He will be greatly admired,” Hopper's deputy, Phil Callahan (John Reynolds), told the paper.
What if part of the Mind Flayer still lives on in the Upside Down? And since Billy became an extension of the Mind Flayer, that could mean he too is still alive, even if it's just on a subconscious level. That could also be good news for everyone else who played host to the creature throughout the season.
After regaining his consciousness, Billy made the ultimate sacrifice in the season three finale. Billy quickly confronted the Mind Flayer and sacrificed himself to stop it from taking Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). A surprising act of selflessness from such a controversial character.
Max is Billy's younger stepsister in the show, meaning that his death – as Sink told Teen Vogue – understandably leaves her traumatised.
When his father remarried, Max became an easy target for his anger. After being reminded of his mother and her beauty by Eleven, Billy cried, showing deep down he still loved his mother. This memory and love for his mother, made Billy sacrifice himself to the Mind Flayer and apologize to Max for abusing her as he died.
At the end of the third season, two characters appear to die: Billy Hargrove, who sacrifices himself, and Jim Hopper, who gets left for dead when Joyce Byers closes a portal to the Upside Down.
Billy and Max recently moved to Hawkins from California. Billy is a bully. Billy has a problem with Lucas, for unknown reasons. He really, really doesn't want his stepsister, Max, to be around Lucas.

He tells her that he is her son, and his mother responds coldly. she tells him saw him with the police that day he got lost, but chose to abandon him. She justifies her actions by saying she was, “only 17 at the time”, her parents kicked her out, and she just couldn't take care of him. Here's where things get dark.

It was during this scene that I had an inkling he would somehow sacrifice himself and save them at some point because it shows he's still in there. They keep showing him just crying even as he does whatever the mindflayer was making him do.
Both characters were firm fan favourites and died in moments of heroism as they strove to protect Hawkins from the Upside Down. Billy was slaughtered just moments after redeeming himself by saving Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) from certain death, following a string of murders under the influence of the Mind Flayer.

Now, if Montgomery's screen work isn't the reason why he looks so familiar to you, you might be a music fiend with an affinity for Australian music and a fantastic memory. Billy's apparent death suggests that Montgomery won't reprise his role on a potential fourth season of Stranger Things, but never say never.
Yet, he died a hero. Stranger Things managed to give us a real look into Billy's psyche throughout season 3. Billy is fatally wounded and dies once the gate to the Upside Down is closed.
Throughout Season 3, he makes matters worse by recruiting an entire army of possessed people for the Mind Flayer — though of course, this time he didn't have any control over his actions. Ultimately, Eleven was able to tap into Billy's humanity, causing him to sacrifice himself rather than letting the monster kill her.
