SINGAPORE – From Feb 1 (Friday), new rules on path- and road-sharing will take effect. It will be mandatory for cyclists to wear helmets when riding on the road. However, cyclists who are crossing the road to get from one public path to another will be exempted.
The simple answer to why cyclists ride in the middle of “traffic lanes” is because they are allowed and advised to take such actions. “Riding prominently in the lane indicates to a driver approaching from behind that, for good reason, they should not overtake at that time.
E-scooters to be banned from Singapore's footpaths starting Nov 5. Electric scooters will be banned from footpaths in Singapore from Tuesday (Nov 5), with offenders facing fines of up to S$2,000 and jail time of up to three months once the ban is strictly enforced from 2020.
Currently, PMDs can be used only on shared paths (at up to 25kmh) and footpaths (10kmh). They are not allowed on roads. The number of accidents involving PMDs has gone up with the increase in users. There were 228 reported accidents involving PMDs on public paths in 2017 and last year, with 196 resulting in injuries.
Cyclists are allowed to travel on any A road - so long as there is not a road sign with a picture of a bicycle in a red circle. The problem with roads such as the A3 is that it has similar conditions to a motorway such as having three lanes and the same speed limit.
SINGAPORE: The ban on riding e-scooters on footpaths will be extended to all motorised personal mobility devices (PMDs) under amendments to the Active Mobility Act introduced in Parliament on Monday (Jan 6). The ban came into effect for e-scooters – defined as motorised PMDs with handlebars – on Nov 5 last year.
A motorized scooter is a powered stand-up scooter using a small utility internal combustion engine or, more commonly, an electric motor. Classified as a form of micro-mobility, these scooters are generally designed with a large deck in the center on which the rider stands.
In addition, drivers will have new ways to reach the airport via the ECP or Tanah Merah Coast Road. In addition, 3.5 kilometres of new cycling paths will let pedestrians, cyclists and personal mobility device users reach Changi Airport's Terminal 5 building from Tampines and East Coast via Park Connectors.

Bike on the road in the same direction as traffic (only bikers under age 12 are legally allowed to ride on sidewalks). Even though they lack a motor, bicycles are considered road vehicles just like cars and trucks.
This could take the total number of shared bicycles in Singapore to 13,000, including the existing 3,000-strong fleet belonging to SG Bike, the only other bike-sharing operator here after the exit of companies like oBike, ofo and Mobike.
Motorists should leave at least 1.5m of space between their vehicle and the cyclist when overtaking at speeds less than 30mph. This should be greater in poor weather or when the car is travelling at speed.
The problem with cyclists is that they want the world. They want to use the road without wanting to follow the rules of the road. And as much as that happens with motorists, it happens twice as much with cyclists, cause it's just easier to get away with. At least some car drivers seem to feel bad about it.
Why does the peloton so often catch up with cyclists who try to break away from the group? The answer is the wind. Travelling at high speeds, cyclists experience wind resistance even in the still air, and with three weeks of riding and exertion, they will do anything they can to reduce their exertion.
It is illegal to ride your bike under the influence of drink or drugs, and you would be guilty of this if you were unfit to ride to such an extent as you are incapable of having proper control of the bicycle. You would be committing an offence whether you were on a footpath or on the road.
The main reason for cyclists riding in the middle of the road is to avoid poor road surfaces at the edge of the road. You may think that potholes are bad when you're driving in a car, but that's nothing compared to what they're like when riding a bike.
Pedestrians must always be yielded the right of way at intersections and crosswalks. Bicycles, since they are considered “vehicles,” are subject to the same rules as other drivers; they are not always granted the right of way. When turning left at an intersection, you must yield to oncoming traffic.
Depending on where you live, it might be illegal for you or your child to ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet. There are no federal laws mandating bicycle helmet use in the United States, although many states and localities have mandatory bicycle helmet laws applicable to minors.
Here are seven essential tips to follow when you drive around cyclists.
- #1 Share the Road.
- #2 Be Careful Opening Your Doors.
- #3 Shoulder Check Before Turning Right.
- #4 Look Both Ways Before Crossing a Bike Lane.
- #5 Use Your Signal Lights.
- #6 Pay Attention to the Cyclist's Signals.
So when can a cyclist occupy an entire lane? “At any time,” said Toronto police constable Hugh Smith. “It's the same rule that applies to a motorcycle and a car.” Under the Highway Traffic Act, most slow-moving vehicles should stay in the right lane or a close to the right side of the road or the curb “as practicable.”
Generally speaking, on normal public highways, the speed limits do not apply to bicycles. The Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act speeding limits apply only to motor vehicles and their drivers. However, it is possible for local authorities to impose speed limits on cyclists but this is rarely done.
Cyclists, for the most part, like being treated like a vehicle in a legal sense. If you approach an intersection with a red traffic light, you are required by law to come to a complete stopjust like vehicles. Some states, like Idaho, dictate that cyclists stop at a red light, and then yield to all other traffic.
Since bike lanes are usually located on roads that also have sidewalks, pedestrians are not allowed to use the bicycle lane. On roads without sidewalks, pedestrians are restricted to walking on the left side of the road or its shoulder, facing traffic, and must move clear of the lane for oncoming cars.
What the law says on cycling. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 all road users, including cyclists, must not cross the stop line when the traffic lights are red. And if you are spotted by police it is likely they will offer you advice or an on-the-spot fine of £30.
There is no British law to compel cyclists, of any age, to wear helmets when cycling, even though the Highway Code suggests that cyclists should wear a cycle helmet “which conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened.”
When you ride a bicycle in the dark, the law requires that you have lights and reflectors; and the law is quite specific as to what lights and what reflectors you use. Lights and reflectors are not required when the cycle is stationary or being pushed along the roadside.
Mountain bikes are harder to pedal and slower on pavement. But they have a cushy ride, an upright riding position, and can travel easily on a wide variety of surfaces. Hybrid or cross bikes are almost as fast and easy to pedal as a road bike, while being almost as comfortable and versatile as a mountain bike.
In short, it is illegal to cycle on a pavement alongside a road, unless it has been marked as a cycle track. However, children under the age of 10 are below the age of criminal responsibility.
