A dying guinea pig will become very weak and unable to feed or water himself as his death approaches. You can make his passing less uncomfortable by offering him water from a spoon, syringe, or water bottle. Blend or mix a guinea pig "smoothie" that contains hay, water and ground up pellets and feed it to him.
Mite infestations in guinea pigs can cause such intense itching that seizures can result. With a mite infestation, the skin is crusty and raw from scratching, there is usually hair loss and secondary bacterial infection may result.
The seizure-like behavior is due to the intense itching sensation caused by the mites burrowing through the skin. Some guinea pigs may have mites and a normal coat of hair. Other guinea pigs will develop patches of hair loss. In the span of a few weeks, a guinea pig may become bald over most of its body.
Guinea pigs can become overheated very quickly. A guinea pig who is overheated may lie on his side and appear to be struggling for breath. He will be hot to your touch and may even feel floppy or limp. If you believe your guinea pig is overheated, you need to get him out of the sun immediately and rush him to the vet.
Guinea pigs may shake or shiver for many reasons- Joy, Cold, Fear, Anxiety could be some of them. There is also a skin parasite called Guinea pig mange(Trixicara cavis), which can lead to pain, shaking & twitching in guinea pigs. We often see guinea pigs shaking during a thunderstorm or fireworks.
If your cavy is in good cheer, you might notice him running in circles, constantly shifting his course, whether inside of his enclosure or in a bigger designated play section of your home. Running in happy guinea pigs is often accompanied by leaping. If your guinea pig is popcorning, he's probably feeling jovial.
Because of the suddenness of the jumping, it's been dubbed popcorning. When people see it for the first time, some think that the guinea pig is suffering a seizure. But there's no reason to worry. It's a perfectly normal behavior.
Treatment
- In all cases investigate and treat underlying causes, supplement with vitamin C (50mg orally daily) and clip overgrown nails.
- Mild cases. Change bedding to soft, dry material such as clean hay, or padded surfaces with shredded paper.
- More severe cases.
- Severe cases.
- Antibacterial agents.
- Pain relief.
Pneumonia is actually the leading cause of death in Guinea pigs. It is generally caused by a bacterial infection.
Sadly, guinea pigs can fall victim to a number of different illnesses, and can do so shockingly fast. Sometimes, they show few to no outward symptoms. Respiratory illnesses, especially pneumonia, strike guinea pigs hard. Guinea pigs also can suffer a stroke or heart attack at any age, often for no apparent reason.
Thankfully, vibrating in the cavy universe often signifies a good thing -- the simple joys of purring. Guinea pigs frequently convey their cheerful moods through giving off cozy and deep vibrating noises. Vibrating in cavies can denote feelings other than giddiness as well.
Are guinea pig mites contagious to humans
These mites are species specific so will not transfer to you as they have an inability to live in human skin. However, there have been cases where people with sensitive skin have come out in an itchy rash after coming into contact with infected guinea pigs.Working Too Hard for Breath
Fast or labored breathing can be a signal your guinea pig has an upper respiratory infection, a common ailment among guinea pigs. A clicking or crackling sound from the lungs often accompanies dyspnea, as well as sneezing, wheezing and discharge from the nose and/or eyes.If your guinea pig cries out, falls to one side, and starts twitching, it is most likely infected with a skin parasite known as guinea pig mange (Trixicara cavis). Guinea pigs bite and scratch themselves to gain relief from the irritation, regularly causing open sores that can become infected. The problem is usually solved when patients are treated with two to three doses of ivermectin, 14 days apart.
Guinea pig mites cannot live on humans. Even if they do transfer from pet to a person, they will only cause short-term itchiness. Someone sensitive may develop mild dermatitis (skin infection). Treating the animal will also help get rid of any mites on the people around it.
To treat internal parasites, guinea pigs are often given 200 mcgs of ivermectin for each kg of body weight, either by injection or orally, every 7 days for 3 weeks.
These mites cause such itchiness that your guinea pig may even go into seizures and die. "Sarcoptic mange mites can cause extreme clinical signs because they cause extreme itchiness." With sarcoptic mange mites, the following signs may occur: Affected skin will get thick and sometimes yellowish and crusty.
Your vet will likely prescribe an oral or injectable medication. It should be administered two to four times total, with two weeks in between treatments. If you have more than one guinea pig, you'll need to take them all in to get treated.
My understanding is that you use Revolution just like you would Ivermectin. You have to repeat the treatment 2 or 3 times for it to work. Most vets will say you should start to see an improvement in 11 days, but sometimes, depending on the pigs and the serverity it may take longer.
Method 1
If you suspect that your pig has lice or mites, don't just use flea medication on them. Take them to the vet instead. Get a shampoo or spray for static mites. If your guinea pig has static mites – which makes it look like your pig has dust in their fur – you'll need a special spray or shampoo.Unfortunately, mites are invisible to the naked eye, so examining your guinea pig during this stage cannot provide any proof of the problem. Your vet can perform a skin scraping to diagnose the mites, but this is a painful process for the guinea pig, so many will simply order the treatment and watch for improvement.
Mines seem to scratch themselves at -least- once or twice every five to ten minutes. Sometimes even more.
Not directly, but an unclean cage is the perfect breeding ground for things that if not lethal can certainly be harmful to guinea pigs. If you aren't cleaning the cage, you likely aren't paying attention to their other needs (i.e. food & water), and guinea pigs can certainly die from that.
Be patient when calming down your guinea pig
- Choosing The Appropriate Cage Size.
- Keep Hideouts For Your Guinea Pigs.
- Introduce New Things Into Their Cage Slowly.
- Minimize Loud Noises.
- Try Not To Make Sudden Movements Around Your Guinea Pigs.
- Speak Calmly To Your Guinea Pigs When Handling Them.
What you can do to help the remaining guinea pigs. Leave your deceased guinea pig in the cage (or put them back if they died outside of the cage) so that your remaining guinea pigs can see him. They may ignore him or trundle up and lick him. Give them half an hour with their friend before you remove him from the cage.
Most adult guinea pigs do not take well to new roommates of the same sex. If the older one is also larger, he or she may attack or even kill a younger guinea pig. Guinea pigs who want to kill each other frequently bite their opponent on the back, right behind the shoulder blades.
