Many states have outlawed or restricted quaker parrots because they are viewed as agricultural threats. These birds multiply quickly. They lay five to 12 eggs, which hatch within 24 days. In the United States, these birds devour cherries, grapes, corn and pears.
There are no restrictions on the length of time you may travel abroad or on the number of birds you may take with you. If your pet bird is listed under CITES Appendix I, you will first need to obtain a CITES import permit from the foreign country.
Pet parrots don't fly away for various reasons: they prefer to stay with their flocks; the safety and comfort of their home environment; and if they are feeling full or tired. Some parrots also have their wings clipped — making it difficult to fly in the absence of wind.
Many hotels will accept cats, birds and other small animals. Other pet types such as cats, birds, monkeys, snakes, or other animals are allowed at the discretion of each property and require prior approval.
Once in Canada, pet birds must be quarantined for a minimum of 45 days. The original import permit issued by the area office must accompany the birds to Canada. The birds must be accompanied by the owner (the person to whom they personally belong) for entry into Canada.
The airline allows domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits and household birds (except cockatoos) to travel in an aircraft cabin with the owner on most flights within the U.S. An in-cabin-carried pet can fly aboard the airplane in addition to a carry-on bag for a one-way fee of $125.
You should record the details of the ring and microchip number of your bird in the Pet Parrot Passport a document produced together with the Parrot Society. The passport will be invaluable in helping to identify your pet if it is lost or stolen.
The price for a complete US Pet Passport in 2020 can cost anywhere between $38 and $1,235. The cost varies depending on the veterinarian practice you visit, the species of your pet, and where you are traveling to and from.
JetBlue accepts small cats and dogs in the cabin on both domestic and international flights if the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 20 lbs (9 kg). Pets must remain completely in the carrier with the door closed and under the seat during the entire journey.
If it's a pet parrot, traveling in the cabin is preferred, as this will be less stressful. Unfortunately, the largest commonly kept parrot species—macaws—will not fit in an approved airline carrier, which must be able to go under the seat in front of the owner.
Birds must have been in the country of export at least 12 months, and proof of address will be required. Once the CITES is issued, a USDA import permit must be applied for a least 2 weeks in advance, and reserve quarantine space.
If you are going away on vacation, find a trusted sitter to come in and look after your parrot. Someone your parrot knows and trusts is the best option, followed by other friends, family, neighbors, or pet sitters found on trusted sites like Trusted Housesitters.
