The agency encourages the use of transponders because it's cheaper than collecting cash. As part of a 2014 agreement, the state collects the tolls when motorists who have SunPass transponders use Central Florida toll roads. Having more motorists using E-Pass transponders will save the agency money.
How It Works. Once attached to your windshield, the transponder transmits a radio signal to sensors mounted on the SunPass toll lanes, themselves. Instantly, the transponder relays the proper toll amount and deducts it from your prepaid account.
They can breeze through the SunPass ONLY, E-PASS ONLY and LeeWay ONLY toll lanes throughout the Sunshine State. How Does It Work? Cameras take a photo of the rental car's license plate as it goes through the toll lane and sends a bill for the tolls to the rental company's tolling program vendor.
If you don't have SunPass, photos will be snapped of your license plate as you pass under the toll gantries at toll plazas. Bills for tolls will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. But you'll pay 25 cents more at each toll and a monthly service charge, probably a few bucks, if pay tolls this way.
The SunPass Portable Transponder costs $19.99 plus tax and the SunPass Mini Transponder costs $4.99 plus tax. All units allow motorists to have tolls electronically deducted from a Prepaid Account.
The penalty for failure to pay a toll may be $100 or more in fees, 3 points assessed to your license, assessment of court costs and suspension of your license and/or vehicle registration. The severity of the penalties is determined by the number of violations you have received in the past.

Drivers from northern states that use the E-ZPass system for toll roads will be able to use their passes to drive on some Central Florida toll roads — and get the same discount SunPass users receive. They will not work on toll roads managed by the Florida Department of Transportation, like Florida's Turnpike.

How to Safely Remove an E-ZPass From a Windshield
- Grasp your transponder firmly at one corner and lift until the Dual Lock strips separate.
- Wrap your transponder in foil or the original Mylar bag it was shipped in, prior to storing or mailing your transponder back to the E-ZPass Service Center.
- Heat the two mounting strips on your windshield using the hairdryer.
The good news about interoperability
Some states are compatible with other states. For example, Florida's SunPass works with Georgia's Peach Pass and North Carolina's Quick Pass. It's also scheduled to become interoperable with South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas this year.
