When wood in a fire gets hot enough, the cellulose inside starts to turn into gas. As wood burns, the mix of expanding gases and cellulose breaking down makes the pockets of trapped steam burst open from the wood, one by one. This is why you hear the crackling and popping noises.

Hemp oil is a solid choice for projects with pallet wood because it nourishes rough pieces without destroying their durability.
Take your chosen shade of Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Garden Furniture Paint and paint the pallets. This clever paint requires no priming, is water resistant and is mould and alge resistant too. Use a mini roller for an even finish.
Scrubbing the wood with bleach or soapy water and/or rinsing it with a power washer are good methods. Let the sun do a bit of cleaning, too, if you can—leave your washed pallets outside in full sun so they dry out completely and benefit from the disinfecting powers of UV rays.

Allow direct sun on the tops of piles or ends of lumber. Another common way to dry some species of lumber and pallet material is the use of fan sheds. A bank of fans is used to force air though lumber stacked with stickers or through stacked assembled pallets.
