Crickets boast an excellent nutrient profile, providing a great source of lean protein, vitamins and minerals. Crickets contain about 65% protein, and other insects can contain up to 80% protein. Astonishingly, some insects have the same or greater amount of iron than beef.
What do Crickets Taste Like? Crickets have a uniquely nutty, slightly smoky essence, with just a hint of astringency on the back of the palate. It's a very pleasant umami flavor which with deepens with roasting. Beyond that, crickets are delicious!
Most crickets readily feed on fresh and tasty plant material, fruits and veggies. The insects also enjoy seeds if they come across them, which can spell trouble if you've just spread grass or other plant seeds. On the other hand, they can help keep annoying weeds, such as crabgrass and ragweed, in check.

New Member. Chances are your calcium powder is calcium carbonate, which needs a relatively acidic environment to dissolve. It will just clump up in water into a sort of cement that can cause impaction. You can buy a liquid calcium supplement with a dropper.
Too many may lead to obesity in your gecko, so providing these around once a week should be enough. Butterworms should also be kept as a treat, as they are fatty, contain bad calcium and some geckos have been known to get addicted to them and refuse all other food.
Calcium doesn't go bad, the additives they add to the calcium mix might however. If it's straight calcium powder then you'll be fine, if it has other minerals, vitamins, or additives to it you should probably replace it.
The most important mineral for a leopard gecko is calcium. Calcium supplements often come with a vitamin D3. This is because you need vitamin D3 to absorb calcium. Calcium is very important for your leopard gecko because it helps build strong bones, form eggshells, control muscle activity and send nerve impulses.
Can I put calcium powder in my leopard geckos water? No. The reason for that is because calcium is insoluble and will likely either just float to the top or sink straight down to the bottom of their water dish. For stubborn leopard geckos, providing them with calcium this way would be awesome.
A baby leopard gecko will need to eat and be supplemented with calcium every day because it helps them grow significantly within that first year before they reach adulthood. An adult leopard gecko will likely not consume as much calcium as a baby leopard gecko because they have already done most of their growing.
Another method of providing a source of calcium, D3, and nutrients to leopard geckos is to “dust” the insects with a vitamin utrient powder immediately prior to feeding the lizard. Place a small amount of powder in a plastic bag with the insects and lightly shake the bag to coat the insects with the powder.
We recommend dusting twice with Rep-Cal Calcium with D3, then once with Rep-Cal Herptivite, then repeating. For example, if you feed every day, dust Monday and Tuesday with Calcium with D3, then Wednesday with Herptivite, then Thursday and Friday with Calcium with D3, then Saturday with Herptivite, etc.
Crickets eat food that is very similar to a human's diet. They are omnivores that may eat fruits, vegetables and meats. In nature they eat what they can find such as rotting leaves, rotting fruit, vegetables and insects. Carrots: Save the carrot peel and tops for your crickets and they will love them.
Cost Effective Foods
Crickets can also be fed bread, digestive biscuits, cornflakes, apples, bananas, grapes, and also vegetables like lettuce, potatoes, and tomatoes.Lifespan – Crickets only live about 8-10 weeks once adults, and die of old age. Cooling temperatures later in the year will often kill adult crickets. Adult crickets can live without food or water for up to 2 weeks.
Crickets are relatively easy to keep. They need basic food and water to survive, and when well taken care of, they will remain a good, active supply of live crickets to feed your pet for weeks. Always have on hand a dry food source and a separate water source for your crickets.
Generally, veterinarians recommend that 2-3 times per week, you LIGHTLY sprinkle food offered to bearded dragons with a calcium powder (calcium gluconate, lactate, or carbonate) not containing vitamin D3, and an additional 2-3 times a week, you LIGHTLY sprinkle food with a calcium powder containing vitamin D3.
The crickets can live in a bag for almost 24 hours.
In nature, crickets are prey for many animals, from birds to bears, and they are a key part of the food chain. Crickets are also a popular feeder food for many pets, such as lizards and spiders.
Apple: When you core an apple save the core and feed it to your crickets. Apples are high in fiber. Banana: If you have a Banana that is quickly turning black (don't we all have a few?) peel it and feed a small piece (about ¼ inch thick) to your crickets.
Give your crickets time to breed.
If you've given them enough food, water, and heat, and your crickets are generally happy, they should breed profusely. Give them about two weeks to breed and lay the eggs in the soil. The crickets will burrow down about an inch below the topsoil in order to lay their eggs.Generally, veterinarians recommend that 2-3 times per week, you LIGHTLY sprinkle food offered to bearded dragons with a calcium powder (calcium gluconate, lactate, or carbonate) not containing vitamin D3, and an additional 2-3 times a week, you LIGHTLY sprinkle food with a calcium powder containing vitamin D3.
The plastic tube conveniently measures your crickets. Allows you to quickly and accurately count your live crickets, mealworms and super worms. It holds 100 one-crickets.
Once they've reached a year, go down to one feeding a day of 10 to 20 crickets. ✅PRO TIP: You'll also want to dust the feeders with calcium AND a multivitamin. Dust a baby bearded dragon's food with calcium 4-5 times a week, no more than once a day and provide a multivitamin 2 to 3 times a week.
This is what I've found works best for me: Slice the box open and put the whole thing in a large plastic garbage bag. Open the box, take out the egg crate layers and shake them free of crickets one at a time; remove each one when done. Shake the box free of crickets once the egg crate is out.
The best way to dust is what we call the “shake and bake” method. To shake & bake, you take a sandwich ziploc bag, put your feeder insects inside the bag, and lightly dust some Repashy Calcium Plus or Zoo Med Reptivite with D3 in the bag. Close it up, shake them up, and then feed immediately.
Supplementation through dusting
Food is simply mixed with a moderate amount supplement powder in an spill- or escape proof plastic bag or container. In order to keep it fresh, dusting should be done just prior to feeding the insects or greens to Bearded dragons.
