Obsolete Models as of October 2019
The following iPad models became obsolete on or before September 26, 2019. By "obsolete," we mean the model is both discontinued and unsupported by Apple, and it won't receive the latest versions of iPadOS.So what exactly is Retina Display? In essence, it is a high quality, high resolution screen display. Not only does improved resolution decrease the strain on your eyes, but the hardware Apple puts into the Retina Display models of their products are even better than their non-Retina counterparts.
The iPhone 11 screen (Apple calls it a “Liquid Retina HD” display) is a Retina display with 326 ppi resolution, a 1,400 to 1 contrast ratio, and 625 nits of brightness. The iPhone 11 Pro's “Super Retina XDR” display is rated at 458 ppi, has a 2,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio, and offers 800 nits of brightness.
Unlike iOS 11 before it, which did drop support for some devices, iOS 12 supports the same iOS devices as its predecessor. Specifically, iOS 12 supports the "iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation, iPad 6th generation, iPad mini 2 and later and iPod touch 6th generation" models.
The third-generation iPad shipped with iOS 5.1, which was released on March 7, 2012. It can act as a hotspot with some carriers, sharing its internet connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, providing that it is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model.
Retina displays have little to do with the resolution. It's just a resolution where at eye level you won't see any pixels, while 4k TVs (really UltraHD, because they're 2160p tvs not 4k tvs), can show pixels if the TV is large enough.

How to Update iPhone or iPad to iOS 11 Directly on the Device via Settings
- Back up the iPhone or iPad to iCloud or iTunes before beginning.

iPad Models: Find Your iPad's Model Number

Your iPad 2 will work as it always has and the apps you have installed on it will continue to update and receive some level of app updates relevent to your current iOS. The last update for iPad 4 is iOS 10.3. 3. Your device cannot physically run iOS 11, which requires a 64-bit processor. Generally, Apple stops issuing updates once a device can no longer support the current version.

- Select Settings.
- Select General and Software Update.
- If your iPad is up to date, you will see the following screen.
- If your iPad is not up to date, select Download and Install. Follow the instructions on the screen.
