A one-time fee a company charges upon the creation of a new account. For example, a cellular phone company or an Internet service provider may assess an activation fee in addition to the first month's bill. The activation fee is intended to compensate the company for the expenses associated with setting up the account.
Most service providers claim the activation fee covers creating an account, setting up the various features and configuring your phone for accessing their network. And since they're usually charged per device, avoiding activation fees can save a ton of money--especially if you're on a family or multi-line plan.
