Costa's Hummingbirds occur in desert scrub in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts, and chaparral and sage scrub areas in coastal California. During the nonbreeding season they use similar dry habitats as well as parks, gardens, and higher elevation mountains.
Native to the Americas, hummingbirds largely form the family called Trochilidae, which is also their scientific name. There are about 350 different known species of hummingbirds including the bee, anna, ruby-throated, and topaz.
Takes nectar from flowers, and will feed on tiny insects as well. Often visits desert natives such as agave, chuparosa, desert honeysuckle, and fairy-duster.
