To become a swim instructor, you do not need traditional education. Instead, various certifications make you eligible. The American Red Cross Training Services offers certification to teach swimming and water safety for all ages. Certification Requirements

What is needed to start the lifeguard training course:
- You need to be 16+.
- Must be able to jump, much preferably, dive into deep water.
- Swim 50 meters, two lengths of an average pool, in 60 seconds.
- Swim 100 meters continuously, at your own pace, on front and back in deep water.
- Tread water for 30 consecutive seconds.
To take this course, you must be 16 years or older, hold a current National Lifeguard (NL) or Bronze Cross certification, current Standard First Aid, and you must be able to swim strokes at the YMCA Intermediate stroke standard or equivalent.
To Become a Lifeguard in Canada you Need:
- Step 1: Bronze Medallion. Learn rescue skills, fitness/stroke efficiency, timed swim, aquatic related emergencies and injuries, and CPR B level training.
- Step 2: Bronze Cross.
- Step 3: Standard First Aid.
- Step 4: National Lifeguard Course.
The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool.

A YMCA lifeguard earns about $9.00 an hour on average. Pay typically varies by location and duration in the position. Some YMCA lifeguards may earn higher hourly wages. In addition to salary options, YMCA lifeguards can get lucrative employee benefits.
Being a good lifeguard is physically challenging. You will want to be in good shape. Lifeguards follow the 10/20 rule. Once a lifeguard notices a potential problem, they must respond in 10 seconds and be able to reach the person in 20 seconds, so it is absolutely necessary to be in shape and to be a strong swimmer.
A Junior Lifeguard is a 13-14 year old volunteer who likes to work with children, peers and be around water. Junior Lifeguards may also be needed during open/recreation swim.
Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 600 m swim. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be "current" for 24 months from the certification date.
Swimming requirements vary by certification type, but at a minimum you should be able to swim 300 meters (six full laps on a standard 25-meter pool) without resting while using the “rhythmic breathing” technique.
Candidates must be able to swim 600 m in 18 minutes. Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR-C are pre-requisites for lifeguard training in the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) program and Lifesaving Society Instructors certifications. Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid (CPR-B).

The very short answer to this question is no, you technically do not need to be certified to be a swim instructor to teach someone how to swim. Anyone can teach swim lessons in virtually any pool.
