Overall Sky broadband customer rating: 75%Much like last year, Sky's performance in our 2020 broadband survey is average in most respects. Value for money was its weakest area, but customer care is positive at 81% approval. It did also win an award for Fastest Superfast Broadband Provider.
6-10 mbps: Usually an excellent Web surfing experience. Generally quick enough to stream a 1080p (high-def) video. 10-20 mbps: More appropriate for a "super user" who wants a reliable experience to stream content and/or make fast downloads.
Speedtest.net
- Speedtest.net is perhaps the most well-known broadband speed testing tool around.
- Speedtest.net picks five nearby servers (out of a list of more than 1,000) to measure the ping, download speed and upload speeds over TCP with with an HTTP fallback.
There are many reasons your Internet connection might appear slow. It could be a problem with your modem or router, Wi-Fi signal, signal strength on your cable line, devices on your network saturating your bandwidth, or even a slow DNS server. These troubleshooting steps will help you pin down the cause.
To boost your internet speed, you can try repositioning your router, or even buy a new one. If you're willing to try a more technical solution, you can change your Wi-Fi network's signal channel. You should also check that you aren't being cheated out of internet speed by your internet service provider.
Sky's Broadband and Fibre products are not subject to traffic management. This means we won't reduce your speed at any time, regardless of how much you upload or download.
Testing your WiFi speed with your phoneBut which one is the right one for your needs? A good, broad-scope app is the Speedtest by Ookla app, available for both iPhone and Android. Like their web-based app, their mobile app can log your speed tests and track both download and upload speeds.
The speed of this data is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). One megabit is equal to 1,024 kilobits. This conversion means 1.0 Mbps is more than 1,000 times faster than 1.0 kilobits per second (Kbps).
On a smartphone or tablet, free Speedtest.net applications are available. Download them from your app store of choice, launch them, and test your speed. Remember, if your smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the app will test the speed of the WI-Fi network.
Then if you're not getting 3Mbps WiFi in every room, we can send you a Sky Broadband Booster (if you don't already have one). We'll give you the money back that you've paid for your Sky Broadband Boost. And give you it free for the rest of your contract – so you can still benefit from the other great features.
Sky Broadband Ultrafast offers download speeds of 145Mbps and upload speeds of 27Mbps, with no download limits, for £35 per month. This is more than double the speed of its slower fibre options and 12 times faster than copper-based ADSL broadband, making video buffering and game lagging a thing of the past.
@bodger69 Sky Superfast for most people is just a re-branding of what is essentially the same Openreach Fibre to the Cabinet product as the old Sky Fibre product. You are correct in your assumption that most people will get the same speeds as it is the same technology where speed depends on line length.
The new Sky Hub has the modem built in, which means, if you sign up to Sky Fibre, Sky simply post you the router and some other bits, and all you have to do is plug it into your master phone socket - where the phone line comes into your home - and into a power socket, switch it on and you're more or less good to go.
