If your SD card is faulty, your PC won't recognize it. To check, you'll need to locate another PC with a card reader, and test your SD card in that computer, to see if it works. If it does work in the other computer, then it's not a faulty card, but it may be that your card reader is faulty.

On many HP laptops, the SD card reader is a tiny slot on the side of the machine, just under the left hand rest. If using a USB peripheral card reader, plug the USB device into a free USB port on the HP laptop. Insert the SD card into the card reader. Windows will assign the SD card a drive letter.
There's not a clear winner in terms of various flash memory formats here. On one hand, you can't operate your handheld multimedia devices without an SD card. On the other hand, a USB flash drive is a much more superior in its ability to work continuously with your operating system.
Both flash drive and memory card are portable. The main difference is, flash drives are removable devices, while memory cards are often kept within the gadget or console. Flash drives are popular as a data transfer device.
SD cards (or Secure Digital cards) also use non-volatile memory like flash drives. SD cards offer a higher storage capacity than most typical flash drives and for less cost as well. SD cards do come in 1TB capacities though they are generally priced outside an average consumer's budget.
USB flash drives which have USB 2.0 support can store much more data and also transfer much faster than larger optical disc drives like CD-RW or DVD-RW drives and may be read by many other systems such as the DVD players, automobile entertainment systems, and in a number of other handheld devices such as smartphones

Most modern phones — Android or otherwise — will be able to use a microSDHC card. The versions are backward compatible (a microSDXC card slot can use a microSD or microSDHC card) but there is no forwards compatibility, and if your phone can't use a microSDXC card, it won't ever work.
