Word makes it easy to change the horizontal scale of a font, by using the Scale control on the Advanced tab of the Font dialog box. Using the control changes only the horizontal scale; the vertical height of the font remains exactly the same.

What is a condensed font? The letters of a condensed font have set-widths that are narrower than in the standard typeface from the same family. The term condensed font can also apply to fonts where each variation is much taller than it is wide.

Size. Choose a font that's at least 16 pixels, or 12 points. If many of your users are older adults, consider using an even larger font size—19 pixels or 14 points. A small font size is more difficult to read, especially for users with limited literacy skills and older adults.

The most widely used and bundled Arial fonts are Arial Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic; the same styles of Arial Narrow; and Arial Black. More recently, Arial Rounded has also been widely bundled. In Office 2007, Arial was replaced by Calibri as the default typeface in PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Word.
Font SelectionThe goal is to use easily recognizable characters such as Arial, Verdana, Tahoma and Sans Serif versions of any typeface are often more legible, since the letters are simple. APH offers a free downloadable font, APHont, that was developed specifically for low vision readers.
Generally, characters in Arial are thicker and take more space than those in Times New Roman.
Adjusting the Width of Characters
- Select the characters you want to scale.
- Press Ctrl+D to display the Font dialog box.
- Make sure the Character Spacing tab (Word 2007) or the Advanced tab (Word 2010, Word 2013, and Word 2016) is selected.
- Use the Scale drop-down list to specify the scaling you want applied to the characters.
- Click on OK.
Highlight the text that you want to make bigger or smaller. To increase the font size, press Ctrl + ] . (Press and hold the Ctrl , then press the right bracket key.) To decrease the font size, press Ctrl + [ .
To use a custom page size:
- From the Page Layout tab, click Size. Select More Paper Sizes from the drop-down menu. Selecting More Paper Sizes
- The Page Setup dialog box will appear.

- The page size of the document will be changed.
Change font size
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Font size.
- Use the slider to choose your font size.
Change the default font in Word
- Go to Home, and then select the Font Dialog Box Launcher .
- Select the font and size you want to use.
- Select Set As Default.
- Select one of the following: This document only. All documents based on the Normal template.
- Select OK twice.
To set your computer's displayed font size to default:
- Browse to: Start>Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Display.
- Click Smaller - 100% (default).
- Click Apply.
The term “font” refers to the general shape of a character. Font sizes are measured in points; 1 point (abbreviated pt) is equal to 1/72 of an inch. The point size refers to the height of a character. Thus, a 12-pt font is 1/6 inch in height. The default font size in Microsoft Word 2010 is 11 pts.
Click the [Home] tab > Locate the "Font" group. From the lower-right corner of the "Font" group, click the small arrow. The "Font" dialog box will open. Choose the font style and size you would like Word to use by default (e.g., Times New Roman, Size: 12).
Select the text that you want to change. On the Home tab, in the Font group, choose the arrow next to Font Color, and then select a color. You can also use the formatting options on the Mini toolbar to quickly format text.
