A repeater/extender is very similar to an access point but its job is to simply expand existing router signal coverage over a larger area by using a separate wireless name (SSID). Therefore, creating two networks i.e. Router wireless name (NETGEAR) and the extender Wireless name (NETGEAR_EXT).
A range extender repeats the wireless signal from your router to expand its reach by creating a second network, while an access point relies on a hardwired connection to your network, rather than simply repeating the existing network.
An access point is a device that broadcasts a wireless network in a designated area. Connect your Nighthawk Mesh WiFi Range Extender to your router with an Ethernet cable and install it as an access point to create a WiFi hotspot.
To log in to your extender, enter one of the following URLs in your web browser depending on your device: Windows: Mac OS X or iOS: Android: extender's IP address>
To configure your EX6100 as an Access Point:
- Connect your router using an Ethernet cable to any available Ethernet ports of your EX6100.
- Use your Wi-Fi network manager on your wireless computer or any Wi-Fi device to connect to the NETGEAR_EXT network.
- Once connected, the Device to Extender LED will turn to solid green.
Reset Wi-Fi extender/repeaterIn order to reset your Wi-fi extender, press/switch the reset button and wait for 10 seconds, then switch it back on, or release it. This will reset all the previous settings and will allow you to modify them.
Perform a network power cycle by rebooting your main router and extender. Reconnect to the default WiFi network of your NETGEAR extender. Open the web browser and re-run the NETGEAR extender setup wizard. If the issue persists, reset the extender back to the default factory settings.
This kind of issue can occur if the extender does not have the latest firmware. Process: Make sure the extender is connected to the power adapter provided and into a live power outlet. Make sure the extender is within the Wi-Fi range of the wireless router and client device is connected to the extenders network.
Note: The default username is admin and the default password is password. The username and password are case sensitive. To recover your password, click the Username & Password Help link. To reset your login credentials, see How do I perform a factory reset on my NETGEAR range extender?.

Power on your router. Wait for the WiFi LED to light. On your iOS or Android mobile device, go to the app store, search for NETGEAR Nighthawk, and download the app. On your iOS or Android mobile device, tap Settings > Wi-Fi and find and connect to your router's WiFi network.
If your router doesn't support WPS, go to 'Method 2 - Without WPS button' opposite. 1 Plug the extender into a power socket near your broadband wireless router (e.g. in the same room). Check the extender On/Off button on the top is switched on. Wait 20 seconds for the extender to boot up.
Launch a web browser, visit or and log in with the password you set for the extender. 2. Go to Settings > Status to check the internet status of your extender. If everything is OK as shown below, your extender is successfully connected to your router.

How do I log in to my NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender?
- Launch a web browser from a computer or mobile device that is connected to your extender's network.
- If your extender and router use different WiFi network names (SSIDs), type into the address field of your web browser.
- Click or tap Enter.

Due to more use over time, your WiFi extender accumulates so much on its memory that it starts working abnormally. In that case, restarting helps in unburdening the extender so that it carries the WiFi signals properly to dead zones.
Select Settings > Wireless. The Wireless page displays. To change the WiFi network name (SSID), enter a new name in the Network Name (SSID) field. To change the WiFi password, enter a new password in the WiFi Password field.
If nothing worked after resetting your router and network, you likely have faulty equipment. If it's your router, you can try using a USB network adapter, contact your ISP provider or replace it altogether. Your WiFi adapter or related hardware could be defective, or, your computer needs servicing.
Launch an Internet browser and type into the address bar.
- Enter the router user name and password when prompted.
- Click OK.
- Select Wireless.
- Enter your new network name in the Name (SSID) field.
- Enter your new password in the Password (Network Key) fields.
- Click the Apply button.
