Most OneNote notebooks are saved on OneDrive. To find all your notebooks, go to the root folder of OneDrive in a web browser, then search for *. one across the entire OneDrive account.
OneNote apps don't allow that choice. All notebooks have to be saved to OneDrive, whether you like it or not. That poses a privacy and security concern. OneNote Notebook Sections can be password protected but many users would prefer to keep their private notes entirely private by keeping them off the Internet.
By default, OneNote saves notebooks to the Documents folder in your OneDrive account. You can create local notebooks that are saved to your hard drive, but only in the OneNote 2016 Windows desktop app, not in OneNote for Mac or the OneNote for Windows 10 universal app.
There is no limit on how many notes you can take in OneNote, except for how much storage you have. If you're wise and store your notes on SkyDrive, you can get 7 GB of cloud storage for free–that's a TON of notes. And if that's not enough for you, you can buy up to 200 GB of storage for a great price.
After you sign in, your notes will sync automatically. From your computer, open onedrive.com and sign in with your Microsoft account. Find the notebook you want and click to open it either in OneNote or in OneNote for the web.
In the latest versions of OneNote -- specifically, our apps on Windows 10, Mac, iOS, Android, and OneNote Online -- your notebooks are stored in the cloud so you can access them from anywhere. Notebooks stored only on your hard drive or a file share (called local notebooks) are not supported.
From any browser on any device, easily sign in to OneNote for the web so you always have access to your notes. Sign in to Office.com with your Microsoft account, or work or school account. Select OneNote. Work in your notebook just like you do in the OneNote app on your desktop or mobile device.
The free version of OneNote that comes with Windows 10 automatically creates new notebooks in your OneDrive account, and automatically syncs existing notebooks with your OneDrive account by default. 0, notes and notebooks were stored in a database and individual pages were stored in files in a pages directory in the application private data (not on the external storage or SD card).
Microsoft OneNote is a program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users' notes, drawings, screen clippings and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network.
If you're unable to open and view the notebook in OneNote for the web, the source of the sync problem is likely with your server. If your notebook is stored on OneDrive, check our Service Status page for any known interruptions or outages.
Open the OneNote notebook containing the information you want to export and click the “File” tab. On the backstage screen, click “Export” in the list of items on the left. We're going to export our current page as a Word document, so we click on “Word Document (*. docx)” to convert our page to the latest Word format.
Open a notebook in OneNote for Windows 10
- On any page, click the Show Notebooks button .
- In the Notebooks list, click or tap the name of any currently open notebook that you want to switch to. If the notebook you want isn't already shown in this list, click or tap More Notebooks.

Insert a PDF file as an image
- Select Insert > File.
- Select Insert PDF Printout.
- In the box that appears, select the file and select Open. Tip: If you don't see the file you're looking for, you can sort by name, change the location, or go up in the folder structure.
To import a notebook to OneNote that you've previously downloaded, do the following:
- Unzip the folder found in the file you previously downloaded (see “Export a OneNote notebook” earlier in this article).
- In any modern Web browser, go to the OneNote Notebook Importer.
- On the screen that opens, click Import.
Microsoft offers versions of OneNote for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and it's also available as part of Office 365 and even as a browser-based application. OneNote uses OneDrive to sync all your notebooks on all of your devices, and you need a Microsoft account login to use OneDrive.
