Chickenpox generally resolves within a week or two without treatment. There is no cure, but a vaccine can prevent it. A doctor may prescribe medication or advise on how to reduce symptoms of itchiness and discomfort, and also on how to prevent the infection from spreading to other people.
If you have chickenpox, you should rest but you do not need to stay in bed. The most helpful things you can do are those that make you or your child feel more comfortable. Some steps you can take are to: Drink lots of liquids such as water, juice and soup, especially if there is a fever.

- Apply calamine lotion. Calamine lotion can help reduce itching.
- Serve sugar-free popsicles.
- Bathe in oatmeal.
- Wear mittens to prevent scratching.

- Give approved pain relievers.
When you have chicken pox it is very important that you eat a nutritious diet. First of all home-cooked meal is essential. Also eat foods like wheat, fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, milk, plenty of water, buttermilk, sprouts some herbs like turmeric and garlic (as they boost the immunity).
If you have sores in your mouth, eat foods that are cool, soft, and bland. Avoid any foods that are acidic, spicy, or salty. Take a nonprescription pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, for headache, fever, or general aches and pains. Don't give any medicine that contains aspirin or salicylates to a child or teen.
It is perfectly safe to bathe when you have chicken pox and you would probably feel much better having cleaned your skin. A bread soda bath is simply prepared by adding one cup of baking soda to a bath of warm water.
They may occur all over the body, including the mouth and genital area. Some people may have only a few spots whereas others will have hundreds. Symptoms start appearing 10-21 days after exposure to the virus. Full recovery from chickenpox usually takes 7-10 days after the symptoms first appear.
If your child has chickenpox,it is recommended that you inform their school or nursery, and keep them at home for 5 days. If you have chickenpox, stay off work and at home until you're no longer infectious, which is until the last blister has burst and crusted over.
The first few days are the worst – chickenpox is at its itchiest before the blisters start to crust over and form scabs, so the first 3 to 5 days are normally the worst. This is because the blisters, when filled with liquid, release chemicals that make skin feel itchy.
Other measures that may provide relief include douching after urinating, sodium bicarbonate baths, applying cool compresses to the area, and protecting the area with nappy cream (eg, Sudocrem). Treatment of chickenpox aims to relieve symptoms and limit scratching because this can lead to secondary bacterial infection.
There is no specific treatment for chickenpox, but Paracetamol syrup (Calpol) can relieve fever and calamine lotion along with aqueous cream can ease itching.
To help relieve the itchiness and discomfort of chickenpox:
- Use cool wet compresses or give baths in lukewarm water every 3–4 hours for the first few days.
- Pat (don't rub) the body dry.
- Put calamine lotion on itchy areas (but don't use it on the face, especially near the eyes).
In addition to vaccination, you can help prevent the spread of chickenpox by practicing good hygiene and washing your hands frequently. Reduce your exposure to people who have chickenpox. If you already have chickenpox, stay at home until all of your blisters have dried and crusted over.
Be liberal with skin ointments. Chickenpox spots can be extremely itchy, so make sure you stock up on some topical ointments to help soothe your child's skin. Calamine lotion is often touted as the go-to cream when chickenpox spots break out.
A soft, bland diet if chickenpox sores develop in the mouth. Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl, others) for itching. Check with your doctor to make sure your child can safely take antihistamines. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) for a mild fever.
Can you get chickenpox more than once? Most people who have already had it have developed an immunity for life, although the virus can develop later into shingles. However, although rare, it is possible to get chickenpox more than once.
It is perfectly safe to bathe when you have chicken pox and you would probably feel much better having cleaned your skin. Therefore if your skin is very itchy apply some calamine lotion to the skin and re-apply the lotion frequently because its duration of action is quite short.
Keep Cool
If it's winter, turn down the heat to the lowest comfortable temperature. In summer, turn on the air conditioning. Heat brings more blood to the skin, which only exacerbates the itch.Soft foods such as mashed potatoes, beans and lentils, boiled chicken and poached fish are allowed on the diet. Cool foods such as ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies and yogurt will help soothe the stomach. Bland food such as rice, pasta and oatmeal.
Children should stay away from daycare or school, and public places, while they are infectious. Once scabs form on all the spots, your child is no longer infectious. They may go back to school when the spots are all scabbed over and dry. This can take around 5-7 days.
After about 24 to 48 hours, the fluid in the blisters gets cloudy and the blisters begin to crust over. Chickenpox blisters show up in waves. So after some begin to crust over, a new group of spots might appear. It usually takes 10–14 days for all the blisters to be scabbed over and then you are no longer contagious.
Conclusions. Our results showed that honey has significant in vitro anti-VZV activity. As, honey is convenient for skin application, is readily available and inexpensive, honey may be an excellent remedy to treat zoster rash in developing countries where antiviral drugs are expensive or not easily available.
Keep the skin cool to relieve itching. Dress lightly and avoid hot baths and showers. Ask your pharmacist or health care provider about lotions that can reduce the itching. Prevent the spread of infection by using a household cleaner to wash any clothing or other items soiled with fluid from chickenpox blisters.
