Stainless Steel Spray Paint for DIY Custom Tumblers!
You have to coat the stainless steel with a layer of primer before you can apply the final coat of paint in the color that you want. Primer coats have special bonding agents that help them keep paint on the surface. Any type of primer rated for use with stainless steel and your chosen final paint will do.
Acrylic paints are a great way to achieve awesome colors when painting with resin. When you use liquid acrylics, be sure to follow the 1 to 10 ratio rule; mix 1 part acrylic paint to 10 parts resin. If you use too much paint, your resin could become clumpy and it won't pour well.
Acrylic paint: Seal your acrylic painted mugs with acrylic clear coat. They'll look great, but they won't be safe to drink from. Bake-on ceramic paint is also safe drink from, but unlike the no-bake variety, the paint finish should last for years. Spray painting: Lightly sand the outside surface of your mug.
Although virtually any type of paint will bond to a properly prepared stainless steel surface, a two part epoxy paint is the preferred coating – here is a great guide on how to paint stainless steel.
How do you get acrylic paint to stick to metal?
- Clean the metal surface which you will be painting with alcohol wipes.

- Wait for the coat of primer to dry, or cure.
- Paint on the acrylic paint with a paintbrush.
Unless you want to use an entire bottle of glitter to fully cover your tumbler, it's a good idea to spray paint it first. Use a similar color spray paint as the glitter you plan to use.

This problem can be caused by anything floating/falling into your resin while it cures, resulting in imperfections in the surface. If you are experiencing imperfections that look more like domed bumps in the resin, skip down to #4.
If you have bumpy, spotty, uneven surface, it might be due to not using enough epoxy to coat the object.
To apply the glitter, you need an adhesive. Some folks like Mod Podge, others like spray adhesive. And, of course, you need the epoxy resin to seal your glitter tumblers. This is what will keep your glitter contained and protected on your tumbler!
It is possible to put epoxy over plastic as long as it is not #5PP. Epoxy will not stick to this specific type of plastic. Plastic was not made to be smothered by a chemical, but it can be done. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative try using acrylic tumblers.
