To get a perfectly smooth finish with gloss paints don't paint directly onto the wood. First use a primer which will block stains from coming through the wood. Shake an unopened paint tin well, open and stir again if necessary, to remove any lumps and ensure the paint is mixed well.
Sand with fine sandpaper between coats after they dry. Make sure you remove sanding residue before applying additional coats. After the final coat of flat paint, sand lightly with super fine sandpaper.
Because trim serves a decorative purpose, the best paint for trim should accentuate the details, so satin, semi-gloss, gloss, and high gloss are all suitable.
High gloss paints are the easiest to clean and are typically used on doors and cabinets exposed to dirt and oil and can also be used for trim and some woodwork. High gloss paint can emphasize surface imperfections.
To avoid sanding you can, however, use a liquid deglosser such as Krudd Kutter or M1. We like to use ether one at 518 Painters. These are specially designed liquids that will degloss most surfaces and promote a chemical bond between your glossy surface and new paint.
Steps
- If possible remove the cupboard doors from your kitchen and move them to a well-ventilated area and place on top of newspaper or a dust sheet.
- Ensure surfaces to be painted are free from wax, oil and grease.
- Once any sanding has been done, wipe down with a damp cloth to remove all the dust from the piece(s).
Polish your car with carnauba wax, once you've finished applying the rubbing compound, in the same manner. This brings out the shine in your new enamel paint job.
When you see shiny wood, it's likely that the wood's shine is caused by a coat of polyurethane on it. You can take virtually any piece of wood and add a DIY shiny wood finish using polyurethane. The process is not difficult but it is time consuming and takes a lot of hard work to get a smooth, flat, shiny finish.
Most of the time, a layer (or several layers) of the polyurethane causes the shiniest and glass-like appearance on the wood finish. Adding a layer of the polyurethane coat onto the wood piece is the easiest way to make the wood shiny and glossy.
Mix 1 cup Olive Oil and 1/2 cup white vinegar . Pour this home made polish on a soft piece of cloth and gently rub it on the furniture in circular motion. If the wood looks dry, let the mix set on the surface and then pour some more polish on the cloth and rub the dull surface to shiny one.
Instructions
- Sand your furniture piece smooth.
- Vacuum all the dust from the furniture piece.
- Wipe off any remaining dust with a tack cloth.
- Fill your paint sprayer with paint.
- Spray the first coat on your furniture.
- After the first coat is dry, lightly sand the entire surface with an ultra fine grit sanding block.
Basically, you apply very thin coats, then sand to about 400 grit, and after that, do wet sanding to about 2000 grit, and then switch to the polishes.
Put on the polishApply only one thin coat. Then, remove any dust nibs with 1,500-grit sandpaper or a piece of brown paper bag. Finally, using a soft cotton rag or polishing pad, buff the finish to a high shine using automotive paste wax, photo below, which has fine abrasives that polish the finish even further.
Hold the brush at a right angle to the work surface, and lightly brush just the tip of the brush over the whole varnished surface. Once again, work in the direction of the wood grain. Apply two thin coats of varnish, then sand and apply another. Most projects will need several coats of varnish.
The best alternative method on how to get a high gloss finish on the wood is by using a varnish or lacquer. You can easily spray lacquer but if you are using a varnish then you have a choice between both brushing and spraying. Though, you will be more comfortable with spraying as it takes less time and is an easy job.
There are three surefire ways to waterproof your wood for years to come.
- Use linseed or Tung oil to create a beautiful and protective hand-rubbed finish.
- Seal the wood with coating of polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer.
- Finish and waterproof wood simultaneously with a stain-sealant combo.
While you can achieve a mirror effect with other spray paint, Rust-Oleum is the only paint specially formulated to create a perfect mirror finish. Simply spray the reverse side or back side of any clear glass with a thin coat of the spray paint. It dries quickly so see if you need another coat after about ten minutes.
How to Seal Acrylic Paint on Glass

- Read the packaging. Regardless of what type of sealant you've decided on using, never forget to read the instructions.
- Choose a well-ventilated workspace.
- Spray your sealant.
- Allow the layer to dry.
- Repeat steps 4-5 twice more.
- Let it dry.
At least three types of paint may be used on glass: acrylic enamel, acrylics marked as suitable for tile or glass, and specially formulated solvent-based paints.
This painting project works best on wood, metal, and laminate frames. Also, using spray paint will ensure that your finish is as smooth as possible. Using an acrylic paint that is brushed on will leave brush marks on the surface no matter how careful you are.
Hold a pencil in each hand. Simultaneously, write backwards with the usual writing hand while writing forwards with the opposite hand. Having the one hand mirror the other hand's action may help the brain coordinate the movements.
Step 1 ~ Prime the entire mirror, frame and all. Then paint over the primed mirror with chalkboard paint. Give it 3 coats of chalkboard paint, making sure to let it dry completely between coats. Let the chalkboard paint cure over night, then you'll want to season your chalkboard.
Before you begin spray painting, lightly sand the mirror frame to make sure that the paint will adhere better. Step 3: Spray paint the mirror frame. Use any color you want, but make sure you do this step outside and wear a mask and gloves.
To re-silver an old mirror you must remove it from its frame, strip it down to plain glass and clean the old glass very thoroughly. Use Multi-Strip and a plastic scraper to remove the backing paint. Use Mirror Remover and cotton balls to dissolve the silver and copper. Use one of our silvering kits re-silver the glass.
You are better off using a special tape made just for painting, however. Masking tape contains a rubber-based adhesive that is not resistant to UV rays. If placed on a mirror in direct sunlight, the adhesive may transfer to the glass. Painter's tape is more easily removed when you are done with your project.
HOW TO HIDE YOUR MIRRORED WALL
- One of the easiest solutions to hide a mirrored wall is to create a wall of curtains in front of it.
- Another way to hide a mirrored wall is to cover light panels of plywood or MDF with fabric or wallpaper and hang them over the mirrors.
There are numerous types of paint available, including acrylic, latex, alkyd (synthetic) oil paint and natural (e.g. linseed) oil paint. Natural oil paint works best on wood picture frames, as it dries slightly softer and can thus expand and contract with changing temperatures.
