It's that easy! This is because in Chinese, the pronunciation of "u" and "ü" are different! Type "nv" and you'll get the character ? (nǚ) . Type "lv" and you'll get the character ? (lǜ) meaning "green".
Pinyin is the Romanization of the Chinese characters based on their pronunciation. In Mandarin Chinese, the phrase “Pin Yin” literally translates into “spell sound.” In other words, spelling out Chinese phrases with letters from the English alphabet.

It is often used to teach Standard Mandarin Chinese, which is normally written using Chinese characters.
Pinyin is certainly taught in mainland China, and taught before characters in Chinese primary schools—in most preschools and in kindergartens. Zhuyin fuhao is similarly taught in Taiwan.
