The standard ratio for brewing coffee is 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water – 1 tablespoon for lighter coffee and 2 for stronger coffee. That 6-ounce measure is equivalent to one “cup” in a standard coffeemaker, but keep in mind that the standard mug size is closer to 12 ounces or larger.
A general rule is use one tablespoon of coffee per brewed cup. Most coffeemakers come with a one tablespoon measuring spoon. You can adjust the amount of coffee you use based on your taste and based on the strength of the beans you're using. If brewing a 12-cup pot, for example, add 12 level tablespoons of coffee.
To make four cups of coffee at average strength, use 36 grams of coffee and 20 ounces (2 1/2 measuring cups) of water. That's about 4 level scoops of coffee, or 8 level tablespoons.

The most common and effective way to troubleshoot your coffee maker is to clean it. If your Mr. Coffee is beeping but not brewing, first check your water supply. Check to make sure the filter and lid are in good condition and the correct position.
What you can do: The most practical solution is to unplug power for 1 hour or so, then plug it in and see if will power up again. But if it will not make any difference, the faulty control board needs to be replaced entirely. You can bring the Cuisinart coffee machine in for repairs, and they'll do it for you.
Get CleaningFill your coffee maker's water chamber halfway with white vinegar. Fill it the rest of the way with water. Put a paper filter in the basket to catch any hard water deposits or other debris that may be loosened. Brew half of the water/vinegar mixture, then turn your coffee maker off.

The most likely reason for your coffee maker's slow brewing pace is that it needs to be cleaned. Water from your tap can build up calcium and minerals deposits in your coffee maker and make it brew slowly.
The beep often means that you have to adjust the brew settings. Function Knob to Auto Off. Use the Hour and Minute buttons as in #1 (to set the time) to program your coffeemaker to shut off from 0 to 4 hours after brew cycle is finished.
Place filter into the coffeemaker as directed in the instructions included with your coffeemaker. Note: use caution when inserting filter as improper placement can tear the filter skin. We recommend changing the water filter every 60 days or after 60 uses, more often if you have hard water.
If you are using unfiltered water, you should use a charcoal water filter in the coffee maker as it removes chlorine, odors, and tastes from the water, and prolongs the life span of the coffee maker.
But to specifically answer about the difference between #2 and #4 filters, a #2 size filter is designed to be used with 2 to 6 cup electric machines or 1-2 non-electric coffeemakers. A #4 size filter is designed to be used with \8-10 cup non-electric coffeemakers or 8-12 cup electric coffee machines.
