Jabber is an open source, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer instant messaging (IM) services such AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. ICQ ("I Seek You") is a program you can download that will let you know when friends and contacts are also online on the Internet.
The Jabber protocol is XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), and any client program that supports XMPP can communicate with any other user with an XMPP client, providing the sender is in the recipient's contact list (buddy list).
It looks like an email address, but it's used for instant messaging instead. If you create an account at the Jabber.org messaging service your JID will be of the form "username@jabber.org", but your friends might have JIDs from gmail.com or any other XMPP service.
Jabber is an initiative to produce an open source, XML-based instant messaging platform. Similar to the Linux and Apache projects, Jabber developers volunteer their time to work with the code over the Internet. As a result of their efforts, anyone can download the Jabber client and server for free.
From the main Jabber screen, select the Chat bubble icon. At the very top of the contant list, select Clear to delete your chat history for all chats.
