How does Waze know about the police officers on the road? Simply put, crowdsourcing. When you use Waze you're given the ability to report multiple things (or confirm reports from other people).
If you've noticed, Waze no longer gives you the quickest route to your destination by default. Instead, it gives you a route that sometimes makes your trip longer. Waze will once again select the best route automatically, instead of the worst one.
Waze won't die immediately, of course. It will be a slow demise, since it will take some time for Google Maps users to start using the new social features and for Waze users to migrate. But migrate they will.
When reporting traffic in Waze, you can specify whether the traffic is moderate, heavy, or at a standstill. You can also include a picture and comment with your traffic report.
