The rules: You can drive in the USA against your Indian driving licence for a year, as long as the license valid and in English. If, for any reason, it is not, you need to carry an International Driving License (more on that below). You also need to have a copy of the I-94 form, which shows the date you entered the US.
According to the official US government website, International Driving Permits in the United States can be obtained only by the residents. Therefore, if you have a tourist visa, your valid national driver's license and the permit, you can drive in the United States without any limitations, except for duration time.
The good news is that yes, you are able to drive in the US with a full UK license and do not require a US license unless you are moving there. Legally, a UK license is accepted to allow you to drive in the US. You should also be aware that there are different driving laws across different States in the US.
International driver's licenses do not exist.In the United States, IDPs are only issued by two organizations (AAA and AATA). An IDP is a permit, not an ID card or a driver's license, and it won't even be recognized if you don't also hold a valid driver's license.
An American who has settled abroad would have to obtain a local license at that point. While you do not have to be an American citizen to obtain an International Drivers Permit in the state of California, you do, however, have to have a US driver's license, passport photos, and the required fee ($15).

You must apply in person (this means that third party applications will not be accepted) and complete the application form available from the Post Office.

Driving in Europe with US licenses is acceptable in most countries, but a select few disallow it. Make sure you look into what countries you can and cannot visit with your US driver's licence, and keep in mind, an international licence can come in handy either way.
Driving privilege reciprocity allows a person to use a valid, unexpired foreign license to operate a motor vehicle in Texas for up to one year or until a person becomes a Texas resident, whichever date is sooner.
