The K2 area is safe (for one thing, it is entirely controlled by the army). The concern is rather that you must travel through Islamabad/Rawalpindi. There is zero local population on the K2 trek, except at the start and towards the end near Hushe village.
K2, at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft) above sea level, is the second highest mountain in the world, after Mount Everest at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). Although the summit of Everest is at a higher altitude, K2 is a more difficult and dangerous climb, due in part to its more inclement weather.
Normally it's a 3/4 days trip from Gilgit to the base camp and back, 2 hrs drive from Gilgit city to Raikot bridge, where-from a jeep. The base camp is located at 3900 meters, some 5 to 7 hrs trek from fairy meadows and back.
K2 is approximately 50 Km. from Indian boarder so you will be required to travel with a Pakistani Army "Liaison Officer" (L.O.), and each expedition would provide his allowances & equipment etc. A reasonable budget for a mid-size team (without gear) is 8,000 USD per climber.
One of the reasons why is Annapurna so deadly is because of its unpredictable climate. Annapurna remains cold and covered with snow throughout the year, on top of that, it can receive high velocity wind and snowfall in any season, which makes climbing the mountain tough for the climbers.
It's so deadly because of the combination of elements. It is about 800 feet lower than Everest, but the topography is much tougher. Climbing Everest you have stretches that are steep, then it flattens off. There have been several years recently in which nobody managed to climb K2 because the weather was so bad.
Most sources indicate that Gangkhar Puensum (7,570 metres (24,840 ft)) in Bhutan or on the Bhutan–China border is the tallest mountain in the world that has yet to be fully summited.

On May 14, 2005, he became the first (and only) person to land a helicopter, the Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel, on the 8,848 m (29,030 ft) summit of Mount Everest.
Each Sherpa must have a full price climbing permit and there have been discussions to ban them as they are viewed as taking the jobs of the HAPs. All of this results in higher prices for Pakistan climbs, but they are still less expensive than Everest. A permit to climb K2 is around $1,700 versus $11,000 for Everest.
