Meaning of the + symbol
The plus (+) symbol is used to represent the outbound, international access code when writing international telephone numbers. Essentially, the symbol means that the caller needs to insert the code used to begin an outbound international call from the country they are calling from.Plus sign (+) before an international number suggests that the phone network should add the exit code* digits before the country calling code automatically. 1 is the country or international code for a phone. It is used for long distance, so the phone knows where to route it. It is usually not necessary if your call is staying in the US, as long as you still use the area code.
To call the UK from the US, just follow these simple dialing directions:
- First dial 011, the U.S. exit code.
- Next dial 44, the country code for the U.K.
- Then the area code (2–5 digits).
- And finally the phone number (4–8 digits; area code plus phone number equals 10 digits).
What does the +1 mean in front of a phone number for contact? It means the phone number is expressed in an International dialing format. The plus sign “+” means, “dial internationally, using whatever code is required, 'in the country where I am right now', to dial to another country”.
Most countries' dialing plans feature a so called Trunk Code (Trung Prefix). This is a digit, usually 0 (zero) that is placed in front of telephone numbers for DOMESTIC CALLS ONLY. However, most people are not aware of the fact that this digit MUST BE DROPPED WHEN DIALING FROM ABROAD. Without the 0 (zero)!
Calls to a toll free (also known as freephone/freecall) number are paid for by the receiver of the call, making them free for you, the caller. However, when dialing such a number from another country, you (the caller) will be charged international rates. So the call is no longer free when dialed from abroad.
This has since been changed and all calls to 1800 numbers are free for the caller. The holder of the 1800 number will be charged for each incoming call and the rates differ depending on the originating call. These rates are determined by the service provider of the 1800 number.
To dial a landline or mobile number from a mobile phone dial 0 or +63 followed by the three-digit prefix and the seven-digit number. Mobile prefixes always begin with a 9 (eg 917, 906). Roaming with your home phone is another, though likely very expensive, option.
