The designation Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS; French: Navire canadien de Sa Majesté [NCSM]), is applied as a prefix to surface ships in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Joint Operations Command. The similar designation of Her Majesty's Canadian Submarine is applied to submarine vessels.
HMCS Bonaventure was a Majestic-class aircraft carrier, the third and last aircraft carrier in service with Canada's armed forces.

In the 21st century the Royal Navy operated a submarine named HMS Clement with the registry, suggesting it continued to be used at least until then. ( ENT: "Minefield") HMS, at least in the current era, stands for "his/her majesty's ship".
As of August 2021, there are 75 operational commissioned ships (including submarines as well as one historic ship, HMS Victory) in the Royal Navy, plus 11 ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA); there are also five Merchant Navy ships available to the RFA under a private finance initiative.
According to Steel's Original and Correct List of the Royal Navy, in April 1794 the navy had 303 vessels in active service. In 1799, including captured vessels, the total had risen to 646, of which 268 had been French. By adding the 597 corsairs taken from all nations, the total number of ships taken was 942.
The five Type 31 'Inspiration-class' frigates are part of the drive to push the total back to more than 19. The first ship, to be named HMS Venturer, is due to launch by 2023, with the next four on a drumbeat of one per year starting in 2024. Deliveries of all five ships are expected to be completed by 2028.
