The High Court has exclusive jurisdiction over serious crimes such as treason, murder, and rape and, in practice, deals with armed robbery, drug trafficking, and sexual offences involving children (over which it shares jurisdiction with the sheriff court).

The district court is also a court of sessions when it exercises its jurisdiction on criminal matters under the Code of Criminal procedure. The district court is presided over by a district judge appointed by the state governor with on the advice of state chief justice.

Presently the Karnataka High Court is functioning under Acting Chief Justice L Narayana Swamy, Senior most judge of the Karnataka High Court. Justice Narayana Swamy was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice after the erstwhile Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court in January 2019.
Justice S Mani Kumar was on Friday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court here. He was administered the oath of office by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. Mani Kumar is the 36th Chief Justice of the high court. He succeeds Justice Hrishikesh Roy, who was elevated to the Supreme Court.
