In accordance with the land grant mission of the University, the Michigan State University Libraries allow any individual free access to facilities, stack collections, space and resources, except for late night access between 1 AM and 6 AM, when identification must be presented for security purposes.

The Detroit Public Library is an independent, municipal corporation governed by a seven member Detroit Library Commission. Members are appointed by the Detroit Public Schools Board of Education. The seventh member, the current president of the Board of Education, is an ex-officio member.
The Mark Twain branch of the Detroit Public Library was demolished in 2011 after decades of neglect. The Mark Twain branch of the Detroit Public Library opened to the public on February 22, 1940 with over 20,000 books.
Currently, the primary support for DPL is property taxes paid by the residents of Detroit. Detroiters actively support their public library. Without state funding and/or newly identified revenue streams, the Detroit Public Library cannot continue to function as a free statewide resource.

The first free modern public library was opened in 1833. The Peterborough (N.H.) Town Libraries was the first institution funded by a municipality with the explicit purpose of establishing a free library open to all classes of the community.
Does the Library have a copy of every book published in the United States? No, but it does have millions of books and printed materials, maps, manuscripts, photographs, films, audio and video recordings, prints and drawings, and other special collections.
