Spain is pretty famous for its delicious and spicy dishes. And one of those is paella – a rice dish that originated in Valencia. Spanish people view paella as a regional Valencian dish, but many non-nationals consider this to be the national dish of Spain. There are loads of types of paella.
The Canary Islands are not a country. Despite the fact that they're geographically part of the African continent. But they 'belong' to Europe. As mentioned above, they're actually recognized under the protectorate of Spain and are therefore European.
The most common misconception is that the difference in the names for this island is related to the Spanish dialect. According to this theory, it is pronounced Mallorca in Catalan and Majorca in Spanish (Castilian). However, this is not true and in fact it is also Mallorca in Castilian Spanish too.
The Balearic island and the Canary Islands are the two major island groups in Spain. Balearic Islands lies on the Mediterranean Sea, where as the Canary Islands lie on the Atlantic Sea.
Canary Islands, Spanish Islas Canarias, comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Spain, consisting of an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, the nearest island being 67 miles (108 km) off the northwest African mainland.
Spain has some of the most beautiful islands in Europe. The most popular Spanish Islands are equally divided between the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. From the glamour and glitz of Ibiza to the windswept volcanoes of Tenerife there is something for every traveler on the islands of Spain.
Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands, in the western Mediterranean Sea off the east coast of Spain.
Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Madeira and Africa are too far away and/or too low-lying to be seen from La Palma, and the same is probably true of the tiny Savage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens in Portuguese, Islas Salvajes in Spanish).
The three smallest islands in the Canary Islands are La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. They are also the least visited, and the least 'spoilt'.
Morocco does have a few points of contention with Spain, however, over territorial waters between its shores and the Canary, chiefly because of fishing and oil drilling rights. Morocco has no claim to the Canary islands, they have never occupied the territory. They have no cultural or historical presence.
Instead, the islands get their name from a Latin term—Insula Canaria—which means “Island of the Dogs." The ancient Romans who first visited the islands gave them this name. Others believe the dogs referred to were actually Monk Seals, which in Latin were translated as “sea dogs."
Why we get winds in LanzaroteThe low pressure draws air in from above and below the equator, which results in wind moving from a north easterly direction above the line and a south easterly track from below it.
There's a wide range of property for rental on the islands, with a one bedroom apartment ranging from $400 USD per month in large towns and rural areas to $500 USD in resort areas.
The flag of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands is a vertical tricolour of three equal bands of white, blue, and yellow. The state flag includes the Coat of arms of the Canary Islands in the central band; the civil flag omits this.
Ibiza (Spanish: [iˈβiθa]; Catalan: Eivissa [?jˈvis?]; see below), officially Eivissa) is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain. It is 150 kilometres (93 miles) from the city of Valencia. It is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain.
1. Re: Majorca or Ibiza? As Mallorca is a lot bigger than Ibiza it has a lot more to do and see plus a lot more traditional Spanish villages and some fantastic scenery along the West and North of the island.
Menorca and Ibiza are approximately the same size (and so is the Isle of Wight).
The fourth largest island in Spain, the Gran Canaria, covers an area of 1,560.10 square km. It is also one of the seven Canary Islands and is the second most populous of these islands after Tenerife. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital city of this island.
The Balearic Islands, of which Mallorca (Majorca) is the largest, form the only group situated in the western Mediterranean. They are not volcanic in origin as commonly thought, but have been forged by the movement and folding of the earth's surface over millions of years.
The surface-area of the island is 2034.2 km2 and is therefore 5.4 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Atlantic Ocean and the total coastal length is about 327.4 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 85 km by 45 km (maximum width).
Which Canary Island is the best and cheapest to visit?
- Tenerife: the biggest Canary Island is one of the most diverse ones.
- Gran Canaria: just like Tenerife you can find almost everything on Gran Canaria - from cheap beach holiday to shopping or party.
The Fortunate IslesThe smaller islands are La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro which is the smallest and also the most southern. One of the many names of the Canaries is the “Fortunate Isles”.
Tap Water. Much of the tap water found throughout the Canary Islands is desalinated sea water. It is safe to drink, though doesn't taste particularly good and most locals buy bottled water, which is cheap and readily available. If you are in any doubt, ask ¿Es potable el agua (de grifo)? (Is the (tap) water drinkable?)
1) The archipelago was formed from volcanic eruptionsThe Canary Islands were created by a series of volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. From the oldest to the youngest, the islands are Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.
In general, the northern parts of the islands receive more rain and have more cloud cover while the driest, sunniest and warmest conditions can be found in those sheltered resorts along the Southern coasts of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
