Symptoms of a depressed bird can include:
- Fluffed-up feathers.
- Loss of appetite.
- Change in droppings.
- Irritability.
- Feather-plucking.
- Aggression.
- Change in vocalizations.
- Constant head bobbing.
Cockatiels are not solitary birds. Even in the wild, they are always in pairs or flocks. A cockatiel left alone will likely be depressed. Similarly, a cockatiel whose companion bird has died is likely to exhibit grief and depression.
They are extremely social and love spending time with their human flock mates. They clearly recognize their caretakers and are responsive to their voices.
For another -- believe it or not -- some cockatiels hold grudges. If your vet cuts the feathers, your bird won't blame you. Some birds take weeks to get over the trauma, others fully adjust in 24 hours.
The good news is that cockatiels are docile birds that are very social and passive. This means you can house your cockatiel with other small birds without expecting any problems. Some birds that pair up well with cockatiels include red-crowned parakeets, turquoise parrots, and bourke parakeets.
As a pet, a cockatiel's lifespan can be anywhere from 10 to 25 years, with the oldest reported record being 36 years. Young cockatiels change dramatically through the first year of their life, making it possible to estimate their age to within a few months. They reach their adult size by a year old.
Birds can be very long-lived in captivity. One Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (a common Australian parrot made famous by the TV show "Baretta") lived most of his 80-plus years in a zoo. Captive Canada Geese have lived for 33 years, House Sparrows 23 years, and Northern Cardinals 22 years.
Talking 'Tiels
Like most parrots, cockatiels are also capable of talking. A cockatiel's vocabulary is generally not as extensive as other parrots, such as African greys and Amazon parrots, but some can be taught to say a few words or phrases, such as “Hello,†“Pretty bird,†“I'm a good bird,†etc.Cockatiels are gentle, affectionate pets. They fit in small homes and are usually welcome in apartments. You and your cockatiel can have lots of fun interacting with each other; they like to be touched but will also just hang out with you happily.
Also, talking about the lifespan based on gender, the male and female cockatiel lifespan is quite similar. There is no such notable difference in their longevity. If prevented from accidents, both can live the average life. In captivity, they all live around 20-25 years on an average.
How long can a Cockatiel go without food? Cockatiels' time without food is significantly shorter than Budgies as they'll only live 18 to 24 hours without food. Cockatiels naturally only have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, causing them to have a weakened immune system compared to most other parrot species.
As the days get longer, cockatiels tend to take afternoon naps. Most people who live with cockatiels can attest to this seasonal behavior. Birds need 10-12 hours of solid, uninterrupted sleep, which might be more than he is getting if you cover him up when you go to bed and wake him up when you get up.
Observe his behavior closely for clues. Male cockatiels often beg for petting, then bite when they've had enough or bite to let their owners know that they want to be petted and scratched. Others do not want to be petted at all and will bite if you reach for its head.

The larger the cage, the more comfortable it will be for the bird. The minimum size cage for a cockatiel should be 24" long by 18" wide by 24" tall. A good cage should have horizontal bars on at least two sides, as hookbills love to climb. Horizontal bars help to make climbing easier.
