Single mothers are served by their local TANF Programs, and may be eligible for short term cash assistance, with which they can pay for basic needs such as food, housing, and educational expenses. TANF benefits are only granted for a maximum of 60 months (or 5 years).
You can work and still get CalWORKs cash aid as long as you are low income and remain eligible. When you add your earnings to your cash aid, you will have more $$$ for your family.
CalWORKs is a welfare program that gives cash aid and services to eligible needy California families. Families that apply and qualify for ongoing assistance receive money each month to help pay for housing, food and other necessary expenses.
State or Local Cash Assistance
Accordingly, the Social Security Administration will reimburse the state from your SSI back pay when you receive an SSI approval. After SSI eligibility, your Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) will either continue in a reduced amount or stop due to your SSI income.You can apply for the Emergency Needs Allowance if:
- you are a current Income Support client.
- you are an Albertan earning an income, but you do not have enough money to cover this one-time, short-term emergency that will last no longer than a month.
- you meet the Income Support program eligibility requirements.
Similarly, maximum benefit levels vary from less than $200 to nearly $1,000 per month for a single-parent family of three. Ongoing requirements for TANF recipients also differ by state.

If you recently lost a job, and have very low income and few resources, you may qualify for both unemployment and welfare benefits. If you are approved for unemployment, welfare will count the unemployment benefits as "unearned" income, and the benefit will count against your welfare benefits.
Work Disregards. When a cash aid recipient is employed or receives disability based income, CalWORKs regulations allow the following deductions from the monthly gross income: $225.00 from the combined earnings, disability based income or a combination of both. 50% of the earnings remaining after the $225.00 is deducted.

California law limits cash aid to 48 months of CalWORKs for adults. The state will count all months of aid that you got as an adult, since January 1, 1998.

The Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) is a California program that gives money to certain legal immigrants. Legal immigrants used to be able to get this kind of help from the federal government through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

How Child Support Impacts Welfare Benefits. Collection of governmental welfare affects the amount of money that a custodial parent can receive as child support. If a parent is seemingly entitled to receive both welfare and child support benefits, they will not receive both.
How do TANF/Medicaid & Child Support work together? When a parent receives TANF and/or Medicaid, the District pays for the benefits to be provided to the parent and family. In return for paying these benefits, the District is allowed to keep child support payments to reimburse itself for the cost of the benefits.
