Yes it can happen. Change water pump in sons taurus had a leak and loose pulley. Still had leak after change, was under car checking the hose's could not see them leaking grab one and squeezed it coolant sprayed out from behind the timing cover.
The timing cover has a gasket that allows the cover to be securely attached to the engine block. Over time and due to exposure to heat, dirt, road grime, and more, the gasket can often become cracked or wear out. A broken gasket is not the only reason why oil might be leaking from the timing cover.
and how old and the condition the car is. Don't use them. They are nasty solvents which swell the rubber seals and gaskets to perhaps stop the leak short-term, but do more damage to the rubber parts long-term. However, it will also effect every other oil seal and gasket in the engine.
Oil leak repairs are serious business, and to get that repair done, you will pay anywhere from $90 to $140. The labor will cost between $80 and $110, while parts should run you between $10 and $30.
How to Replace a Timing Cover
- Materials Needed. Belt tensioner tool.
- Step 1: Jack up the car. Make sure the car is in park, or in first gear if it is a manual.
- Step 2: Drain the coolant.
- Step 3: Remove the radiator.
- Step 4: Remove the drive belt(s).
- Step 5: Remove the water pump.
- Step 6: Remove the drive pulley.
- Step 7: Remove accessories.

Our stop leak additive solution is guaranteed to keep your leak sealed even after miles of driving or your money back.
The Honda mechanic said 40-50% of timing belt replacement or water pump replacement will result in rear main bearing seal leak. Ask, who ever told you that, HOW changing timing belt or H20 pump on front of engine can cause an oil seal to start leaking in the rear of engine!
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Timing Chain
- Engine misfires or runs poorly.
- Metal shavings found in the oil.
- Engine won't start or fails.
- Check Engine Light is on.
- Engine rattles while idling.
A timing chain runs inside the engine, as it needs to be lubricated by the engine oil. A timing belt typically needs to be replaced between 40,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle. It's a few hundred dollar repair. A timing chain doesn't need to be replaced unless there is a problem with it.
Cam timing can be off if the timing belt or chain slips due to wear of some tensioning component, or if it's installed incorrectly. If the engine is an interference engine, there's a chance the piston will hit a valve, and then your engine is destroyed. If it's a non interference engine, it just won't run.
No matter which type of engine you have, a broken timing chain will cause your engine to immediately stop running and turn off. However, if the timing chain breaks, the piston and valve will collide. The result will be a damaged cylinder head, valve, piston, cylinder, and/or camshaft.
between 40,000 and 100,000 miles
In short, no; you don't have to remove the engine to replace a timing cover gasket or water pump on a 2000 Ford Taurus. You should remove ancillary components such as the radiator and some other parts in order to have easier access to complete this job.
As the cross over chains stretch, you will need to adjust the eccentrics to tension the chain. You will feel the bolt get loose as you back it out, after a few turns, it will feel like it is getting tight again, keep turning until the eccentric can be rotated. Rotate the eccentric to tighten or loosen the timing chain.
A broken timing chain will cause an engine to not start or fail while driving. If it breaks or jumps while driving, the pistons will be damaged from contact with the valves. The valves themselves will bend and potentially ruin the engine.
You may find the need to replace your timing chain at some point; however with the right tools, a service manual and some mechanical know-how, you can do it yourself. Just be aware that this is a major job and can have serious consequences for your engine if done incorrectly.
Driving with an oil leak is potentially dangerous because it is a fire hazard. If the leak is not attended to in a timely manner, the engine can wear down prematurely causing larger problems.
Is it safe to drive with a valve cover gasket problem? Yes, as long as the amount of oil leaking is small, and there is no leak onto hot engine parts such as the exhaust manifold, it is safe to drive your car until you have an opportunity to fix it.
Gaskets are o ring style I would think they are reusable. GM says to replace them, ive re-used mine twice with no leaks. So recommended to replace them yes ,but you could probably get away with re-using them. Just make sure you align everything.
