In general, transmissions take about 9 to 13 quarts to fill completely. The amount of transmission you add will vary, depending on whether you are draining or replacing it all or you are just topping it up. Again, you should avoid adding too much. It is advisable to put in little amounts at a time.

While performing a transmission service, where the pan is dropped and the filter replaced, 4 to 5 quarts of transmission fluid should be adequate to replace what was lost from the pan.
There is a drain plug at the bottom of the transmission (24 mm bolt) to drain it. However, this method is not entirely/completely effective. This drain plug only empties the pan, not the torque converter -- so you're only replacing about 3 to 4 quarts with this method (torque converter does not drain).
Most passenger vehicles take from 12 to 16 quarts of transmission fluid, but the model of the vehicle dictates the type and how much. While many vehicles come with a dipstick to check the transmission fluid, there are other models that do not.
Remember when draining the transmission that the 2004 Ford Taurus holds 13.5 quarts of transmission fluid so have an adequate drain pan on stand by.

Changing the trans fluid in the 08 Taurus is just as simple as changing the oil. Get some Motorcraft Mercon V fluid, drain the fluid from the tranny pan, screw in drain plub, add fresh tranny fluid. Probably take you less time than changing your oil because there is no filter to change.

Check the Level
With the engine warmed up, leave the car idling in park on a level surface. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it slowly, and then pull it back out. Check the fluid level—how high the fluid comes up on the dipstick—against the "full" and "low" or "fill" marks on the dipstick.Open the hood and locate the transmission dipstick on the passenger's side of the engine compartment either to the right of the battery or forward of the firewall. Grasp the dipstick and pull it out of the dipstick tube. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag, then re-insert it into the tube.
