How big is an emperor size bed? It's 2 metres wide, by 2 metres long. Or 6ft 6″ wide, by 6ft 6″ long.
Make sure it's at least 12 inches thick with a base of 6 or 7 inches and a comfort + support layer of 5-6 inches. A 10-inch mattress may work for less-heavy couples who sleep on their backs, but a 12-inch one will be more supportive and longer lasting for most people.
You do not need a box spring or a special mattress for a platform bed. Due to its supportive design, any mattress can be placed directly on a platform bedframe without the need for a box spring or foundation. Memory foam mattresses are also able to be used on a platform bedframe.
With platform beds, mattresses need to be a little thicker to provide the proper amount of comfort and support. Look for models in the 10- to 12-inch range to allow for a little deflation. Thinner mattresses may be perfect for elderly or differently abled individuals, as they will not be as high off the ground.
Disadvantages of Platform Beds
They work better with high quality mattresses, which are more expensive. Clutter tossed underneath the beds is easily visible to guests. Getting up after sleeping requires more effort because of low height. Spend more money on high quality mattress. No you don't need one IF you have a foundation for the mattress to lay on, a thick sheet of plywood would do, since that is basically what a box spring us though you bed will lie 4-6 inches lower if you only have a 4 inch typical mattress. So, if you want to buy a firmer mattress, just remove the box spring instead.
Straps. A less common design to hold a mattress in place on a platform bed is webbed straps. These straps may be located at the head and the foot of the bed, and are pulled over the mattress before the mattress pad or sheets are put on.
Platform beds are very low to the ground, which increases their stability and also makes them great bed frame options for short people. The platform is also perfectly suited for memory foam mattresses, which are popular because they also provide a firm, supportive sleeping surface.
A platform bed tends to have a minimalist design, and can make a room feel more open, as these beds often lack head or foot boards and can be lower than a typical bed. You can use an ordinary bed and convert it to a platform bed merely by removing the box springs and putting the mattress on a platform.

The Swedish retail chain updated some of their mattress & bed sizes so that the mattresses will fit conventional beds and vice versa. IKEA® bed frames don't fit normal standard size dimensions exactly. However likewise a normal size bed won't fit properly as they deviate from classic measurements.
Overall IKEA mattress reviews are positive and on par or better than many other options in similar price ranges. Their latex and latex/innerspring hybrid mattresses seem to have the best reviews overall, and though they are more expensive, they are also likely to be more durable.
