When was the first Cannes Film Festival?
First held in 1946 for the recognition of artistic achievement, the festival came to provide a rendezvous for those interested in the art and influence of the movies. Like other film festivals, it became an international marketplace where producers and distributors could exchange ideas, view films, and sign contracts.
There was no Palme d'Or ceremony, no red carpets, and no yacht parties on the French Riviera this year, but there was still a lineup for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. Of the 56 films selected, 21 are French, which tees them up for theatrical releases and qualifies them for the Cesare Awards early next year.
In 1964, The Palme d'Or was replaced again by the Grand Prix, before being reintroduced in 1975. The Palme d'Or is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry.

The creation of the Palme d'Or dates back to 1955. It is awarded by the members of the Jury of the Official Selection to the best film in the Competition. Before that, the highest award of the Festival was the Grand Prix of the International Film Festival.
Included in the 56 films that will receive the Cannes 2020 label are 15 feature debuts (26.7 percent of the selection) and 13 films directed by women, two more than in 2019.
