Okay so it's pretty common knowledge that Dwight and Jim are friends by the end of the show, but I've been re watching the series and I'm realizing that even though they don't admit it, they've really cared about each other since the start. When Jim transfers he still faxes pranks to Dwight.

Dwight refers to Michael as "the one person I have been hired to protect." Because of his authoritative personality, Dwight worships his boss. He sees Michael as a means to an end, and thus bends over backward trying to please him.
In this episode he was really giving it to Dwight as Pam was upset over thinking Angela had complained about her. I feel that most of Jim's pranks on Dwight developed as his coping mechanism for his unrequited feelings for Pam. So to sum it up: Pam was Jim's addiction and pranking Dwight was his methadone.
