Long answer: All inks fade, however the rate of fade depends on the kind of ink, the substrate, where it is stored, and the weather conditions it is under. All inks, given enough time, will fade but in some conditions the fading will take such a long time that it may take generations to notice this.
Re: How long do regular inks last? Yeah, I meant under normal circumstances. But, if a non-bullletproof ink would last up to 60 years on paper, that's enough for me.
A 5 pack of Lamy cartridges contains around 5mL of ink and costs $5 dollars. In dollars per mL, that's a solid 1. If you buy the same color of ink from Lamy, but get it in bottled form, you get a 50mL bottle for $10.50, which is 21 cents per mL.
Most decently-tipped nibs should last at least a decade. My reference point is a Pelikan M200 that I've had for almost 10 years. There is ample tipping left, but there is noticeable wear, especially when compared to a new nib.
Line variation is the thickness of the line a fountain pen writes vertically opposed to horizontally. A music nib would also use more ink as it has two breather holes with a second ink channel. The next item to consider is the size of the ink cartridge. Larger cartridges obviously hold more ink.
Cleaning pens that are in infrequent use
If you only need your fountain pen every once in a while, please try writing your fountain pen empty about every six months. Otherwise, empty the ink cartridge and rinse it with lukewarm water. When used infrequently, we recommend to fill up your fountain pen only halfway.Lamy´s fountain pens come with three different filling systems. The piston-operated fountain pen is filled out of an ink bottle and is self-cleaning. Cartridge pens are even easier to still.
These inks are non-waterproof and thus won't clog up your fountain pen and their special ingredients allows the ink to write smoothly and with intense colour. Water resistant inks are fountain pen inks that will resist moisture but are not considered waterproof. Some water resistant fountain pen inks include: Sailor Jentle Ink (Blue-Black, Blue, and Black) Pelikan 4001 Ink (Black)
Originally Answered: What makes ink waterproof ? But since waterproof inks do exist, i'll limit myself to that category. The answer lies in the theory of solubility of substances. Materials like salt, sugar and many dyes can be dissolved in water to form a solution.
The standard dyes in fountain pen ink are indeed toxic, but only in far, far greater concentration. Fountain pen ink itself is considered nontoxic, your cat will be fine. As for cleaning, Lamy blue is washable, so soap and water should do it. Everything is toxic, depending on the dosage.
Learn how to quickly change the nib on your Lamy Safari, AL-Star, Vista, or Joy fountain pen. When changing the nib on your Lamy pen, be sure to avoid the tip of the nib. Only hold the nib as close to the end (the side with the Lamy name) as possible. This will ensure that you don't damage the tip, or bend the tines.
Swapping nibs on a regular basis on a Lamy 2000 does not strike me as a good idea, but with sufficient care it should be easy to install a replacement nib without any negative effects.
Parker Quink Ink is full of surprises – not only is it a classic ink used for dip pens and fountain pens, it is also a beautiful medium to use for illustration and painting. It is a non-waterproof ink and as a result can be used in many interesting ways that are different to how waterproof ink can be used.
The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that the Safari is plastic, and the Al-Star is aluminum (think: Aluminum-Star). In the AL-Star, the grip section is a translucent black plastic. In the Safari, the color of the pen's body goes all the way down until you reach the nib.
Do standard international cartridges fit Lamy pens? No lamy uses their own cartridges.
Lamy Cartridges are made of PE. That makes them recyclable. Lamy actually puts the recycle sign on them.
An ink converter allows the fountain pen to use bottled ink, rather than ink cartridges. Some cartridge style fountain pens are proprietary and only allow for their brand of ink cartridge to be used. Bottled inks come in a wider range of available inks and color selection than the cartridge inks.
Lamy Crystal Azurite ink is a deep purple color that is both dark and majestic. It has some nice traits that we'll discuss below and is dark enough on paper to be used as an everyday color of ink at the home or office.
This converter allows you to use bottled ink with your LAMY cartridge pen, instead of using ink cartridges. Compatible with the LAMY AL-Star, Joy, LX, Nexx, Safari, and Vista. Formerly known as the Z24.
By default, the Safari uses refillable cartridges, but if you like, you can buy a converter to use bottled ink. If you do want a wider nib, you can change them out with other Pilot fountain models, and the Metropolitan comes with a converter to use bottled ink over the included cartridges.

While you can find some quality paper in letter size, the majority of the best paper for fountain pens will be either A4 or A5.
- The A5 journal (top) is half the size of the A4 notepad (bottom)
- 10 sheets of HP 120gsm paper (left) are much thicker than 10 sheets of Tomoe River 52gsm paper (right)
Answer: Do not use this ink in a fountain pen. This ink has pigments - think of tiny granules of pigment suspended in water. Those granules will clog a fountain pen feed over time.
