What is malaria? Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans. People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.
Malaria continues to be the most important tropical disease affecting humans. The condition is caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. Infection is transmitted to humans by the female anopheline mosquito. The genus Plasmodium includes > 170 different species that infect mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians.
In 2019, there were an estimated 229 million cases of malaria worldwide. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 409 000 in 2019. Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2019, they accounted for 67% (274 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide.
The malaria parasite life cycle involves two hosts. During a blood meal, a malaria-infected female Anopheles mosquito inoculates sporozoites into the human host . Sporozoites infect liver cells and mature into schizonts , which rupture and release merozoites .
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that also can be used to prevent malaria. It is available in the United States by prescription only. It is sold under multiple brand names and it is also sold as a generic medicine. It is available in tablets, capsules, and an oral liquid formulation.
Papua New Guinea is not a rabies free country, and you may incidentally come into contact with dogs, bats, rats or other rabies carrying animals while travelling there.
The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Papua New Guinea: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, yellow fever, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza. Shot lasts 2 years.
Civil unrest and violent tribal clashes can occur. Avoid protests and demonstrations. Check security conditions and tensions before travelling to new areas, including during election periods. PNG can experience severe weather, heavy rains, flooding, landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Available data suggests that the epidemic is predominantly transmitted through heterosexual contact (84%), fuelled by high-risk behaviour including widespread commercial and casual sex. Approximately 93.1% of current reported cases are adults.
