The focus at Northeastern is on real world experiences, so naturally the level of academic rigor is not comparable to other universities in the area. That being said, the course work is by no means easy. Professor quality varies greatly program and major, but most are very willing to help students out.
Northeastern is not the biggest party school, but you will always be able to find a party going on on the weekends or go to a local bar. The most popular student groups are either the Student Government or NUCALLS (a language club).

If you're looking at acceptance rate alone, then Northeastern University is more difficult to get into. However, each college is looking to fill its incoming class with a variety of students with different strengths, backgrounds, etc. On the flipside, Boston College is easier to get into based on acceptance rate alone.
Generally, Northeastern is in a "safe" area. Very few students are victims of serious crimes. Their is the typical slate of petty thefts (mostly bikes and laptops), but this is common at all city schools.
The worst thing about Northeastern is the enormous cost. It's a great school to attend, especially because of the cooperative education work program, and Boston is an awesome city to go to school in, but it is very expensive and the average student is bound to leave with large amounts of loans.
Anyone who's looking for a lot of school spirit should definitely not attend Northeastern University. Also, anyone who likes organization within extracurricular activities should avoid this school. Because of co-op, many of the clubs here are not very organized and there's a very high leadership turnover.
I have loved every second of my time at Northeastern, and would recommend it to anyone. Overall, the atmosphere and experience at Northeastern is excellent. Boston is an amazing college town, most of the professors are extremely smart and dedicated, and the physical campus is beyond gorgeous.
