GoPro is calling the new Hero 5 Black “Simply the best GoPro, ever.” They're not wrong. Waterproof to 33ft out of the box and featuring 4K video, stabilization, voice commands, and more, the Hero 5 Black is a lot of action camera for $400.
The GoPro Hero Session camera is the cheapest GoPro. It was released in July 2015 as part of the Hero4 range, priced at $399/£329. GoPro later dropped the price to $299/£249 and then $199/£159 in December 2015.

The GoPro is not a great camera for what I would consider "conventional" photography. The iPhone has a fairly respectable camera, is more versatile, can capture still and video, and recent versions can record 4K video and slow motion video. Overall, I'd suggest is a much better camera for general use.

Again when shooting video, the zoom isn't possible while recording. To zoom in or out, you need to stop the recording, changing the zoom, and then resume recording. The zoom slider is only available on the camera's touchscreen. So you can't use the zoom from the GoPro mobile app or with a remote.

Firstly, it's worth clarifying this up front: The GoPro HERO5 Session and GoPro HERO Session are two different cameras. Both are current models; the old version was the HERO4 Session. The very short version of how they differ is that the HERO5 Session has more features and is more expensive than the HERO Session.
GoPro kills the Session camera cube. Three years after its introduction, GoPro is killing its Session camera line. It was the first GoPro to have a waterproof/shockproof casing built-in, it dropped the user replaceable battery and it significantly reduced the camera's footprint.

Only the Hero 5 Black has GPS. That is needed to do the gauges. The HERO5 Black has a removable battery. The battery in the HERO5 Session is hardwired in and isn't removable. You can also run both of them from an external power source, such as an external battery pack or AC, while filming, although doing so means that the camera won't be waterproof.
