This old Linksys WRT54G made us expect them to last 10 years. It was so common and so reliable it became iconic. Sadly, many routers fall well short of that. In theory, a router should last decades, essentially forever.
A good gaming router is essential for keeping your ping low. Gaming routers help to prioritize your network traffic so that your bandwidth is dedicated to gaming. Some routers even claim being able to route traffic to the fastest possible servers you are gaming on.
That being said, at a *general* I would choose Linksys over Netgear. I've owned many products (and test many more) over the years including Netgear, Linksys, DLink, Amped, Belkin, TP-Link and others. Linksys was consistently at the top; most expensive, but most stable, best performance.

Security. Subsequent scans revealed that 25,617 Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers are vulnerable and are leaking not only MAC addresses, but also device names, operating system types, and in some cases WAN settings, firewall status, firmware update settings, and DDNS configurations.
Gaming is much more dependent on latency and reliability (lack of packet loss) than it is on throughput.
