Compost can dry out quite quickly, so mixing it with topsoil is a great way to provide balanced bedding for plants and flowers. You get the best of both worlds with a mixture since topsoil will offer a robust home for roots with plenty of water, while compost will provide a boost of nutrients.
Most lawns contain a lot of clay, which already makes growing grass difficult. Avoid putting sand on a lawn by itself. Using a dry topsoil and sand mix is much better for leveling uneven areas than putting sand on a lawn without mixing.
Making Soil-based Potting Media
- Start with one gallon of sterilized loam soil, commonly called garden soil and sold at garden centers, and pour it into a clean, empty bushel basket.
- Add one gallon of moist, coarse sphagnum peat moss, followed by one gallon of coarse sand, perlite, or vermiculite.
If you are making your own potting soil, mix compost in 1 part compost with 1 part each peat, perlite, and top soil. It's generally fine to reuse potting soil if whatever you were growing in it was healthy. But even if your plants seemed problem-free, or if you did notice pests or diseases popping up, it's best to sterilize the mix before reusing in it to avoid infecting next year's plants.
In most cases, a lawn can withstand the addition of a soil layer that is only 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. You can spread topsoil evenly and accurately over the lawn by using a drop-spreader, or you can spread topsoil simply by flinging it with a shovel.

- A 50mm thick layer of fine compost.
- A handful of complete dry or pelletised organic fertiliser.
- Drench with enough liquid, organic fertiliser to thoroughly wet the entire pot.
That potting soil is worn out because the peat moss has decomposed. That peat moss can decompose even if you never take it out of the bag. If your potting soil has been sitting in your shed since last year in an opened bag and it's gotten wet, toss it. If it somehow stayed bone dry, it should be OK to use.
