Taupe ( /ˈto?p/ TOHP) is a dark gray-brown color. The word derives from the French noun taupe meaning "mole". The name originally referred only to the average color of the French mole, but beginning in the 1940s, its usage expanded to encompass a wider range of shades.
You may have noticed that gray has become one of the top neutral colors in decorating. Beige and tan will probably always be the top neutrals, but decorating with gray gives you options you will not get with other neutrals.
Paint colors that go with knotty pine walls, floors and cabinets include neutral shades of white, beige and taupe; sage green; country blue; and pastel shades.
When gray is paired with a warm wood tone, the wood becomes the color in the room. And that's enough. You don't need 3 or 4 more colors thrown in, because the beauty of the wood stands out and turns that gray into a richer, crisper version of itself. It's just the perfect yin to gray's yang.
Rich, Deep ColorsDark, charcoal gray and deep, gun-metal gray with dark blue or green undertones make oak furniture and cabinets look updated, rich and sophisticated. For high contrast with the golden yellow tones of oak furniture, use a deep shade of the complementary opposite, such as eggplant or aubergine.

To make wood trim look more current and fresh, I suggest staying FAR AWAY from any warm tone on the wall. Nothing is going to make your dark wood trim look more orangey or “dated” than choosing a warm color tone on your walls (yellow, tan, orange, red etc..).
Other paint colors that would look beautiful with honey oak wood trim are warm grays with green or bronze undertones. In bathrooms and bedrooms, blue-greens can also look lovely. Stay far away from any beiges with cool-pink undertones and grays with true blue or violet undertones.

In the bedroom, it's usually the wall against which the headboard rests that is painted in a color different than the other walls. If you choose grey, then you can opt for white for the bedding and even the bed itself.
Cool grays are noticeably blue, green or violet. Warm grays are noticeably pinkish or brown and may have yellow tones. Charcoal off-grays have very subtle differences in the RGB values but remain true neutrals, making them the perfect complement for most colors, especially bright whites, warm citrus hues and pinks.
The entire range of gray presents a neutral backdrop for any mid – to navy blue tie to work. And, the fact that both blue and gray are cool colors ensures they will pair naturally. Even if your gray suit contains warmer brown tones, you'll have no issues because blue also combines perfectly with brown.

A grey couch works great with blue pillows! Then I threw in 2 neutral pillows (whites, creams, tans, or a textured gray all look nice on a grey sofa). This means 1 color + 1 neutral + 1 neutral.
