In some regions, black bears are more commonlyvarious shades of brown. But a black bear can even bered, white or blue. Seriously. Unusually coloredbears have long been the subject of legend andfolklore.
Description: The most striking difference between acinnamon bear and any other black bear is its brownor red-brown fur, reminiscent of cinnamon, from which thename is derived. Adult bears weigh between around 90 and 270kg and are between 125 and 205 cm long. Males arelarger than females.
Black bears are not always black. Theycan be brown, cinnamon, blond, white (e.g. theKermode or Spirit bear) and even a bluish-gray (e.g. theGlacier bear).
The cinnamon bear is a subspecies of the blackbear, the smallest type of North American bear. As itsname implies, the cinnamon bear has rusty brownfur.
Black bears are very opportunistic eaters. Mostof their diet consists of grasses, roots, berries, and insects. They will also eat fish and mammals—includingcarrion—and easily develop a taste for human foods andgarbage.
Although grizzly bears are, on average, significantly larger than black bears, size is not a goodindicator of which species is which. The grizzly bear has apronounced shoulder hump, which the black bear lacks.Grizzlies have a concave or “dished” facialprofile, smaller ears and much larger claws than the blackbear.
Older bears don't experience this kind of colorchange, although their fur may become bleached at the tips, lendingthem a silvery or gray appearance. This is more likely tooccur with the longer outer guard hairs rather than the thickunderfur, as they are more exposed to the elements andsunlight.
Brown bears range in colour from almostblack, brown to very light brown orblonde.
Way back in 2000, we reported on bear behaviorscientists in Alaska who determined that bears were moreattracted to their yellow-and-blue tents as compared to theircamouflage ones. They also figured out in zoo tests that grizzliescan differentiate between colors.
Vision: Black bears are believed to see incolor and have great up close eyesight. Recent research is showingthat their long distance eyesight is not very good, they are likelynot able to see details of a large objects from further than30 yards away.
There's a lot of talk about brightly coloredtents attracting bears. That isn't exactly true, but it'snot exactly untrue either. Bears can see color, justlike us. So, while they might not be specifically“attracted” to bright colors, if a tentis easier to see from a distance, it's more likely to catch abear's eye.
The myth justifies this conclusion by saying that abears front legs are shorter than it's hind legs, so itcan't run downhill. Bears can outrun you nomatter where you try to run. They can run just asfast downhill as they can uphill.
Myth: Bears can't run downhill.
A bear can outrun you no matter what, so if yousee one in the wild do not try to run away from it. Instead, you should stand tall, wave your arms, and talk loudly butcalmly.(Variations in color between species often comefrom the presence of nutrients like riboflavin, distortions in thelens, and iris color.) Black bears also appear yellowto orange, though people sometimes report seeing red.
Most reported cases of man-eaters have involvedlions, tigers, leopards, and crocodilians. However, they are notthe only predators that will attack humans if given thechance; a wide variety of species have also been known to adopthumans as usual prey, including bears, Komodo dragonsand hyenas.
Standing up on its hind legs allows a bear to getmore information from its senses of smell, sight and hearing. It isa sign of curiosity, not aggression. Bears are usuallyactive from dawn to dusk, but they may be seen any time of day ornight.
Satiated polar bears rarely attack humans unlessseverely provoked. However, due to their lack of prior humaninteraction, hungry polar bears are extremely unpredictable, fearless towards people and are known to kill and sometimes eathumans.
