“An effective method that I use to remove shine from a synthetic wig is to apply talc powder or a baby powder. I sometimes find this a bit messy as powder sometimes goes everywhere. But I find by using a spare makeup brush or wig brush to apply the powder can make the process a lot easier.
Hairspray for human hair is especially damaging to a synthetic wig, and it can actually deteriorate the fibers. Most any “name brand” synthetic wig care products should be fine for your synthetic wig. However, if you use a lot of mousse, gel, or spray on your wig, it will likely need to be washed more often.
The main reason we recommend going to the salon is that once your wig hair is cut, then there's no way it can grow back. As synthetic hair keeps its style and isn't as flexible or as easily manipulated as human hair, it needs to be cut in-line with the style so that it looks and feels right when wearing it.
DO:
- Always handle your wig gently.
- Brush your wig with a wig brush before washing to remove tangles and spray build up.
- Wash your wig regularly.
- Use wig shampoo and other wig care products that are formulated specifically for wig fibers.
Of course, synthetic hair is not without its faults; namely, heat styling is a no-no. Because synthetic hair is made of a type of plastic, applying heat with a curling iron, hair straightener, or blow dryer will burn, singe, or even melt the hair (unless you have a heat friendly synthetic wig).
A good quality wig must appear like your natural hair and give the feel of it as well. Furthermore, good quality hair should be easy to handle and give you the option of washing and heating just like your natural hair. After all this, the wig will last years to come.
Step 3: Take a section from the back of the wig to test. Use a blow dryer on medium or high heat. If the fibers are heat resistant, they will relax with heat and feel smooth. If they are not heat resistant, they will start to frizz.
If you have a curly wig you'll need a mousse most definitely. For straight hair you can use a creme but I do not recommend it on all synthetic straight hair some can just use mousse and brushing.
Coconut oil can be used on human hair and synthetic hair wigs and extensions. * Be cautious when using coconut oil on light browns, blondes and red synthetics; use it [oil ] very sparingly and always shampoo thoroughly. Too much product will leave synthetic hair looking greasy.
To get the best results, take roughly a 2-inch thick section of your wig. Lift the strands up so that the ends are above the roots of the wig. Next, take your comb and pull it from the ends of the wig back towards the root. The denser the comb, the more volume you will achieve!

Fabric softener is like leave-in conditioner for synthetic wigs! It can revive even the stiffest of wigs. If you have a large basin add one cup of fabric softener and because you want your wig to be squeaky clean add one cup of laundry detergent (reduce the amount but keep the parts equal if your basin is smaller).
There are many different kinds of wigs out there. While a full lace human hair wig can be parted any which way, synthetic wigs don't work that way. Most synthetic wigs don't come with a part, making it look fake and detectable. There really is nothing else to do with the wig though--what you see is what you get.
Step-by-Step Guide to Washing Your Synthetic Wig:

- Step 2: Clean. After the five minutes, gently dip it up and down in the water.
