You feel it in your heart. You ignore your mind for a moment, you close your eyes and you try to feel what's in your heart. If you feel content, then it was the right thing. Always follow your heart and instinct for your decisions.
If your goal is to be popular in order to achieve self-fulfillment then your definition of what is right is that which leads you to becoming popular, so there isn't a conflict. If being popular is not your goal, then obviously doing what is right is more important.
