The first part of the TDI moniker is relatively straightforward - it stands for 'Turbocharged', indicating that the car has a turbocharger fitted to its engine. As turbocharging technology improved, power and torque outputs continued to rise, eventually resulting in performance diesels that could rival petrol cars.
turbocharged direct injection
The BEW is an alright engine, the first of the PD engine type(higher injection pressures with more precise timing allowing for better power and lower emissions compared to the ALH). It had cam issues, as does the BRM(found in the 2005.5-2007 Jetta TDI).
The 1.9L turbodiesel (ALH code) engine is as simple as it gets. It's a timing belt driven, single-overhead cam, 8-valve inline-four that's mounted sideways under the hood. Being a modern diesel, the injection system is pretty simple, too.
TDI engines are used in motor vehicles sold by the Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda marques, as well as boat engines sold by in Volkswagen Marine and industrial engines sold by Volkswagen Industrial Motor. The first TDI engine, a straight-five engine, was produced for the 1989 Audi 100 TDI sedan.
The engine code is found on the drivers side front on the engine block. You may also find the engine code on a sticker attached to the cylinder head.
MK6 Jetta Sedan: The MK6 Jetta sedan was released as a 2011 model. It is its own animal from a sheet metal and interior standpoint but it is indeed MK6 or 6th generation. MK6: Golf and GTI The MK6 Golf and GTI were sold from 2010 through 2014.
Volkswagen 1.9L ALH TDI DieselWhile Volkswagen has produced many very good diesel engines over the years, the “ALH” engine used between 1998 and 2006 is regarded as one of the best. These engines were only used in cars, with 1.9 litres litres of displacement over 4 cylinders; direct injected and turbocharged.
Volkswagen 1.9 TDI Engine ReliabilityJust like any other engine on the market, the 1.9 TDI will last longer if it is taken care of properly. As crazy as it sounds, we have seen some 1.9's at 250,000 – 300,000 miles, and one at just over 400,000 miles.
The Volkswagen/Audi 3.0 TDI is an engine that was introduced in 2004 and used up until 2013 in Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche vehicles. We would like to say the 3.0 is a reliable engine, but many drivers have found these engines difficult to make it past 100,000 miles without any issues.

The BKD engine used in various VAG cars is a very good and reliable unit. Head porosity was very rare and only afflicted a few cars in my experience. Turbo failure is common on this engine but apart from that they do not suffer injector or oil pump/balancer shaft issues and are a very reliable and widely used engine.
1.9 TDI engine - Vw, Audi, Seat, Skoda. The first generation of the engine commonly known as the TDI-VP was -75, 90 and 110 hp and the fuel supply went through a Bosch rotary pump. The strongest variant is characterized by the use of a turbine of variable geometry and a floating flywheel.
The Golf's 1.6-litre TDI engine also comes in for praise – it's quiet and refined both at idle and when accelerating. And while it doesn't match the Focus for ultimate driving thrills, the Golf is a more capable all-rounder, with its well weighted controls, composed ride and excellent motorway refinement.
TDI enginesTDI is used on all current Volkswagen Group diesel engines, so you'll see those three letters if you're interested in new or used diesel Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda, Porsche or Bentley models.

Here are the top ways to get more out of your engine.
- Upgrade the Air Intake. One sure way to increase the performance of a diesel vehicle is to improve the airflow to the engine.
- Change or Reprogram the ECM.
- Using New Fuel Injectors.
- Turbochargers.
- Performance Exhaust.
The VW Jetta 1.9 TDi has a turbocharged four cylinders in line transverse front engine providing a maximum torque of 250 Nm available from 1900 rpm and a maximum power outpup of 105 PS available at 4000 rpm transmitted to the 16 inch front wheels by a manual 5 speed gearbox.

The Jetta has historically been something of a premium offering in the compact-car class — priced accordingly — but that's changed in recent years as Volkswagen has looked to broaden the car's appeal in the U.S. Diesel and hybrid versions have been offered in the past, as well as a wagon body style, but it now comes

Which is better, TSI or TDI? The TDI engine is a diesel engine that's made by the Volkswagen Group. While most modern TSI engines are capable of excellent fuel economy of 45mpg or more, they generally fall short of TDI engines, some of which manage over 65mpg.
TDIs Are Cheaper Than EverPartly due to all of the Dieselgate uncertainty and negative press, and partly due to the abundance of bought-back cars that need to find new homes, TDI models on the market right now are selling for about 30% less than they otherwise would be.

- Ford Focus diesel 2011-2018.
- Toyota Avensis 2003-2009.
- BMW 3 Series 2012-2018.
- Skoda Octavia diesel 2004-2013.
- Honda Civic petrol 2006-2012.
- Kia Cee'd 2007-2012.
- Toyota Avensis 2009-2015.
- Toyota RAV4 2006-2013.
200,000 miles is considered low for the TDIs if they were properly maintained, 3-400,000 is like midrange and 5-600,000 is getting to be high. My advice is to pull the turbo hose off at the intercooler to check for oil from the turbo seals, KEEP A NEW TIMING BELT on it, and it will go a half million miles easily.
With proper maintenance VW TDIs routinely last well past 200k miles.
These two engines mainly differ in their designs. In common rail injection fuel is atomized more efficiently and provides better efficiency. The ECU controls the fuel injection rate. Ford uses the TDCI acronym while Volkswagen uses the TDI.
On performance, the TDI is a few ticks slower than the GTI in acceleration, and in our handling tests. More important, in its stay here at Road & Track, the Golf TDI fitted with the standard 6-speed manual transmission averaged a laudable 38.9 mpg.
The Passat TDI through model-year 2014 used an AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment to deal with NOx emissions. These cars simply received an ECM reprogramming. 2015 Golf Sportwagens used SCR as well. In these cars, a two-phase fix was implemented.
How Long Do Volswagen Cars Lars? Volkswagen cars typically last around 100,000 miles as long as it is serviced and taken good care of.
