Cummins Turbodiesel Problems
- 12v Cummins Killer Dowel Pin (KDP)
- 24v Cummins #53 Engine Block Cracking.
- 5.9L Cummins Fuel Pump, Injection Pump, & Injector Failures.
- 5.9L Cummins Cracked Exhaust Manifolds.
- 5.9L Cummins ISB Dead Accelerator Pedal.
- 5.9L Cummins ECM Failure.
- 6.7L Cummins Clogged DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
In stock form, the main issues with the 6.7 models seem to be emission related. Specifically - the turbo, EGR cooler and DPF are prone to getting sooted up. When this happens, your truck will go into "limp mode" unless you get those parts cleaned.
1994-1998 2500 & 3500
This is the truck that put Dodge back on the map in 1994. The all-new Ram body style did most of it, but the 5.9L Cummins was there to make sure it delivered. As far as performance potential goes, it doesn't get any better than the mechanical P7100 equipped versions of the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins. The new high-output engine boasts 400 hp and 1000 lb-ft of best-in-class torque. For RAM 2500 and 3500 (equipped with a 68RFE Auto) HP and torque have increased to 370 hp and 850 lb-ft to provide the right power for these models.
Since the 5.9l is an older engine, you would expect it to be somewhat less efficient. However, due to the more stringent EPA emission rules, the 6.7l has additional filters and redactors. This makes it cleaner, sure, but the tradeoff is a noticeably lower fuel economy.

A Cummins diesel engine is recognized around the world as a superior truck engine not only because a Cummins engine will have the horsepower and torque a work truck needs to tow a hefty load, but these engines are also noted for unmatched durability.
About Duramax Engines
Their high horsepower and torque outputs directly compete with Cummins engines, as well as PowerStroke. In addition to durability, Duramax engines are known for their quiet performance. The Duramax LP5 in particular is 38% quieter than previous versions.Cummins set the record straight in their May 2013 newsletter, outlining that Ford Motor Company had purchased 10.8% of the diesel engine manufacturer in 1990. In 1997, those shares were bought back, and as such Ford has not owned a stake in Cummins since.
The new 4000 hp QSK95 is the highest horsepower diesel engine ever developed by Cummins. With an output of 4000 hp and more, Cummins' new QSK95 is the world's most powerful high-speed diesel engine.
The new 1000-lb-ft Cummins 6.7-liter diesel is an $11,795 option for 3500 model trucks only; the standard Cummins diesel is a $9,100 option. Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cab trucks start at $36,445.
Both the 6.6L Duramax and 6.7L Power Stroke are V8 engines, with the 6.7L Cummins being an inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Horsepower and torque numbers are similar between the three diesel engines, but the Cummins engine leads the pack with its torque rating breaching the four-figure threshold.
The stock head bolts should be good up to about 45psi back pressure, and 38 psi boost.
The Nissan Titan XD diesel pickup, which packed 555 lb-ft of torque and a theoretical towing capacity of 12,830 pounds courtesy of a 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel V8, will be discontinued for the 2020 model year, according to a report by Automotive News. It's that there aren't that many Titan buyers in the first place.
The engine may last forever. The DODGE (or maybe Cummins) website speaks about the TD lasting 350,000 miles (mean) between overhauls, 100,000 miles longer than the GM or FORD.
